Hi just joined. I'm wondering if there's anyone on the forum who's hopefully also a tennis player and possibly interested in the idea of trying to apply the golf handicap scoring system to tennis ?

Briefly I'm definitely no expert at all on all things golf or at the game itself whatsoever, also I don't have the time to play much these days either so apologies in advance ! Nevertheless I've always enjoyed the odd game on and off for years, above all the constant and interesting personal challenge of trying to reduce my handicap which at one stage years ago was down to about 11 with I think the par for the course being 61 or 62 or so.

I've also played tennis for a long time as well, though not so much these days either though this is mainly because I've never really enjoyed the game as it's always about who wins and loses and usually soon forgotten; whereas in golf the option and challenge to keep on trying to reduce one's handicap is always there and interesting even when you choose to play alone. I do know about the handicap rating/scoring system in tennis where for all players there are 20 rating bands, starting with 10.2, which is the lowest, progressing to 10.1, 9.2, 9.1, 8.2 etc. until you reach 1.1, which is the highest rating of all as explained in the link at the bottom, but where you always have to play against an opponent with obviously no option to play alone as in golf.

If I'm correct the tennis rating/scoring system above would seem to parallel the golf handicap system quite closely as you're also trying to improve your rating or handicap, but somehow it's never appealed to myself in the same way that the golf handicap system does so I guess it all comes down to individual preferences.

Anyway not so long ago I started wondering whether there might perhaps be a way one could apply the existing golf handicap scoring system to tennis after all, but rather than bore everyone with long details, also being way, way off topic, on the offchance that there are a few tennis players here who might be interested to have a chat about it and whether it's workable or not I can pm them the idea directly.

Thanks....:)

Golf is unique in that not only is your handicap a 'rating' system, but it also provides an excellent 'handicapping' mechanism - where players of significantly different abilities can be competitive in an enjoyable fashion. The Tennis system (and, from memory, I was 3.5 at one stage) merely rates players - it doesn't provide a handicap system like Golf - and I don't believe it is possible for one like Golf to be created!

When I played competitive club tennis I remember that tennis sponsors Volkeswagon introduced a handicapping system for a big competition they ran. Frankly it just couldn't work, if someone was better than me I couldn't beat them even if I was given a 40 love start in every game. It also started by everyone registering and deciding on their own handicap with no regulation as in golf.

They do a H/C friendly afternoon, basically a booze up, at where I play.
