We run a senior trophy each year and we score the best 15 results out of over 20 games we play.
We used to score 12 points for winner 10 for second 9 for 3rd right down to 1 point for 11th and 1 point each competitor out of the top 11.
We are thinking of changing to count the points we score with our stableford result i.e winner could have 40 then second 36 and so on then next week the winner could win with just 36 points second 33 and so on
Do you think it would work out fairer over the season with the new scoring system ?as anyone had any experiences or any constructive comments would be welcome thanks

No because of course differences week to week as you have already said.

Somebody may just play all the good weather comps still play the required amount a get a better result.

We use a simple order of merit system based upon money won in the season. It does favour those who play more than others but it only rewards those in the top 3 of the 3 divisions.

No.
You have pretty much the fairest system already. If your average field exceeds 20 you might consider increasing the pay out to the top 50% ie average field 40 players, score 22, 20, 19, 18...1 - anyone above average (halfway) will score more points than those below average getting their 1 point. Don't adjust the scores to the field - take a view on the field size at the beginning of the season.
Overall it's a much better system than using stableford scores, as Jim has outlined.
We use stableford scores....😩

Our winter turn up comp runs almost exactly as your does except we have 10,7,5,4,3,2,1 points for those 7 places and best 10 scores out of 20 Saturdays. It seems to work very well. We don't use a tiebreaker. e.g. if two players score 35 stableford points which puts them in second place they each get 7pts. Originally when this happened we would skip the 3rd place 5pts and the next person on the list would get 4pts for being "4th". In principle if 7 people tied for the winning score they would each get 10pts and no one else would get any points.

One change which they introduced a couple of years back which many (including myself) hated at the time but we all got used to is that now we no longer skip places when there are ties. So best scores all get 10pts, 2nd best scores all get 7pts third best scores all get 5pts etc. This means a lot more points are awarded overall. This is a good thing in that it spreads the love but actually since only the best (10 in our case) scores over the winter count it doesn't really make much difference to who wins the season long comp.

We've introduced an order of merit for the Saturday roll up. We've decided to take the best ten scores over the calender year. Not everyone turns up week in, week out so we felt it gives everybody a fair chance.

For the reasons already given - it doesn't.

Even beyond the basic advantage when the course conditions are in favour of the players that time, normal distribution curves provide a significant bias to those playing more rounds.

You are effectively running the formula 1 championship based on the cumulative times over the year - and there is a reason they don't do it that way.

It's a new innovation this year and everyone was happy to go with the consensus to take the best scores. We give those that win a two shot cut for the next three games and the runner up (we only play top two) a single figure cut for three weeks so using money earned would be a less cumbersome way of doing it
