I had a similar thing a few years ago.
phisio said it was my shoulder blade not gliding properly
So he told me to sit down arms 90* like holding a tray, tucked into my ribs.
Keeping them bent push your arms up as high as you can , not easy at all.
Took two months to sort out doing this three times a day.

Is that like an arm curl? I'm trying to picture it.

I’ve had problems with both shoulders resulting in much reduced movement of my arm and pain on the outside of the top of my arm. One was tendinitis and the other was frozen shoulder.

I don’t think diagnosing from other peoples experiences/opinions is a particularly good idea but if your doctors is anything like mine it’s next to impossible to get to see anyone.
Maybe a private physio is worth a visit if you can find one?

For what its worth, my restricted movement was most apparent when trying to put my hand as far up my back as I could (as if needing to scratch my back), or with my elbow held against my side and lower arm pointing forwards at right angles to my upper arm - trying to move my lower arm outwards without moving my elbow.

Neither of them were Painful playing golf oddly enough.

This was partly a bit of fun on a day when people are largely stuck inside, although the problem is genuine. If I still have the problem in a couple of weeks I'll go down the physio route.

I'm hoping it will resolve itself in a week or two but if I can help it along with some appropriate exercises then all the better.

About 7-10 days ago I started to get pain in my upper arm. It is the outer area, top of the arm, the top most muscle area. I thought I'd just slept oddly on it but it is not going away.

I can move my arm up and down without issue but outwards ie to put your arm in a shirt or coat sleeve, is painful. The pain feels as though someone has punched me in that area, possibly even with a knuckle sticking out to make it a sharp pain.

I know I could ring to see a doctor but frankly I'm sure they are rammed and I reckon on here people must have had every arm and shoulder injury known to man.

What is it likely to be? Once I know that I can Google the appropriate exercises to do.

The surgery is open..............
Are you by any chance taking Statins for high cholesterol?

Elbows tucked into your ribs as if you are carrying a tray of drinks.
Now keep everything where it is and just lift your arms over your head so all the drinks would go over your head and down your back.
Sitting down stops anything else moving to compensate.
I did it with a tray to start.
He said my shoulder blade wasn’t gliding over the bones underneath and this was straining my muscles where they attach at the upper arm.
I had a permanent nagging pain in upper arm and could not get my arm over shoulder height.
Imo a phisio is a must the longer you leave it the worse it can get but might right itself catch 22.
Good luck.

I had something similar after a spell in lockdown, particularly in regard to putting on a coat.

Got given some stretching exercises and that sorted it.
