All the gear no ....

Suddenly felt a bit silly yesterday as was talking to a low single figure player i know - the most modest guy you'll ever meet - that i'd seen some Galvin Green Waterproofs in the sale, he then tells me that his jacket is 10 yrs old but does the job.

Suddenly a 26 handicaper wearing a Galvin Green jacket (maybe if i can sneak it in past HID) seemed a bit daft compared to 4 handicap in a 10 yr old top.

Does handicap level justify the gear you wear?

P.S Will still buy the jacket though.....

If you can afford to buy top end clothing why should you feel awkward wearing it ?
Whats more ridiculous IMO is the amount of forum membersand golfers in general who are using clubs that there handicap suggests they shouldn't.I have seen these types at every club i've been a member of,they are the ones who have "all the gear and no idea".
 
So because a high handicapper needed a waterproof jacket so bought what man consider to be the best he now has all the gear no idea? What a strange statement.

As for using clubs your handicap suggests you can't again strange statement, use whatever gives you the most enjoyment from the game.
 
If you need a new waterproof then yes go for it. If you've got a good one, that does what it needs to then why waste money? I'm after a new lightweight proof for golf, for the bag. I've got 2 (1 winter marmot 1 berghaus R.O.Y) fairly expensive ones, one is light weight, but as its a walking jacket, I feel bulked out when i'm golfing in it, so i want a very lightweight shower proof one.

When you think about it, you SEE the pros and celebs with the latest gear.... but they

1. Are paid to wear/use it
2. have lots of time to practice with new gear to get used to it
3. know what kind of adjustments they need to make in their swing to compensate new gear
4. have lots of time to practice with the new adjustments.
5. have dolly birds hanging around all the time

(point 5 has nothing to do with it, i'm just jealous)

I agree regarding the clothing - if you can afford the best, buy it. Why not?

With regards to clubs I'm not so sure. Would you advocate a high handicap golfer going out and buying an expensive top end set of blades, just because he could afford them, even if he hadn't a hope in Hell of hitting them? I wouldn't. To gain maximum enjoyment from your golf I really do think you need to get the right clubs.
 
Whatever an individual wants to spend his money on his up to him. I would hope that if he was buying clubs he'd get some professional advice but after that it's up to him.

I would agree with your thinking but some folk like having that kind of kit and if it makes them happy I personally couldn't give a toss what somebody else uses it is a free world (allegedly) ;)
 
I buy whatever I want and dont worry about what people think I just buy clubs to suit my level. I really want the Titelist 910D2 driver but I fear by having a 24 HCP it wont suit me even though im driving well at the moment :-(

Thats the thing that anoys me with golf its like a school playground and everyone judges people for what they wear, what equipment they use or how good at the game they are.

If u fancy the New Titleist 910 D2 driver, then go ahead try it, regardless of handicap, its very forgiving, and Im sure a decent fitter can get a head & shaft Combo to suit most
They even have a 12 degrees driver in the range now
 
Yeah I think I am going to look into one and see what happens, my current driver is a 10 degree and the flight is good so ill have to see.

I'm sure the GG jacket will still be in good nick in 10yrs time if you look after it.

Buy what you like and can afford.
 
Its been just over a year since i started playing, in that time ive gone from my 5 year old hippo set to whats in my sig below, and im worse now than when i started! But in ten years il be the old bloke with his old gear, be buggered if i spend out on new everything again.

Still miss the hippos sometimes :(
