I thought I'd put my money where my mouth is and try out some ultra game improvement irons.
I've always wanted to own a set of Callaways; years ago money was the sticking point, recently the fact that I hit them nice enough but seemed to hook them too often.
I've been trying all sorts over the seasons, Big Berthas, X-?? (whatevers), I even had a go with some forged ones, which weren't exactly hopeless either.
So, here they are, accompanied by the regular clubs.

I'm afraid I just couldn't swap the Cally SW for my Vokey. (?!?!?)

I tried some X-16s also and even had a hit with some Ping G10 irons, but these were still very expensive although 2nd hand.

So, in the name of science, I offer my wallet (£189) to see if there really is anything to be gained by playing with forgiving clubs.

PS. I have kept the Mizunos....so I'm not out of the mizzy league just yet.

Dave. Not so long ago I seem to remember you 'experimenting' with blade-ier clubs. And now onto these? What's going on. Surely you don't need these pups, or are you just going through an experimental stage?

What's the issue with the Mizzy 900's that's made you go down this road? It's not as if you can't play this game either.

Signed.

I'm not sure what the aim of the experiment is. You're a decent golfer who hits his normal clubs pretty well and goes through the usual slings and arrows we all do regarding peaks and troughs in form. I can't see what merits you'll get from these apart from a higher ball flight and marginally more forgiveness. I'd be reselling asap and focussing on hitting my usual clubs better

Ah....I understand.

The Mizunos are fine, I just hit my Callaway 4 iron so well, I wish that would extend to the 5/6/7 in my Mizuno set.

You have to remember there are two distinct eras to my golf career.
Era One 1992-1997, when I tried some blades and regretted it!
Era Two (the horrific sequel!) 2007 onwards, not been near a players iron, honestly guv.

I've been generally advising players (on here) not to be too ambitious with their choice of irons. My feeling is that everyone should play with the most forgiving clubs that can get away with until they just can't live with them.

I had a great round yesterday and only hit one really bad iron shot, the rest were AOK. It's entirely experimental.....worst case, I flog them and lose a few quid.

I've always wanted some Callaways or Pings but have never found a set I felt comfy with....and I hit a lot of hooks too!
My Mizunos came just 5-PW so I bought a BB 2002 4 iron off ebay for £15. I hit this iron catagorically better than any other iron in my bag. Yesterday I used it off 4 tees and 3 fairways, simply the best shots I can remember hitting. If a club like this can help me, I'm keen to try a whole set!

If your looking for a club that was closer to a blade (not as chunky) then I recommend the X14's. Mine were great and I didn't get the rainbow flight I had with the X20's

I agree. The X-14s were great, I hit some balls with them years ago, but I never had the cash. They had some today at the 2nd-hand golf emporium, but were in a shocking state.
I have followed all the Callaway equipment for years, since the original Big Berthas came out when I was playing Tommy Armour 845s. Ignoring the fusion clubs (which are almost off the scale for forgiveness) the X-16 are the top club, but I tried these and couldn't get on with them. The X-18s are not as chunky as many over the years and they just felt right.
I drove 30 miles away, took them out on the range and just started hitting them.....if I was swinging well at 9.00pm last night I didn't really need to warm up. The range has power tees, I just rolled them off onto the mat and one by one they went brilliantly. 1/2 a club shorter (maybe) than my Mizunos, but just like magic.
I'm sold. If I'm not in a month, then so be it, I'll give them to someone or sell them in the paper.

So far, so good. Managed to get round my course today with just a 3 wood, the irons and a putter. No dodgy shots as yet.... :)
Nice 5 iron to 7 foot for birdie at 177 par 3 though. :)

Welcome to my weird wonderful world Dave.....By the way thanks for the heads up on my new bats...... :D :D :D

Just in case anyone is interested before I spill the beans on my test, I was a little miffed today to turn up and discover I'd only be playing about 45 shots today....and 15 of them would be putts.
Silly pairs alternate shot "cup" today. How frustrating.

I played a total of 9 (yes NINE) full shots in the whole round today. 4 of them were with a PW....

Ignoring the PW shots (which all peppered the pin....almost :D) I hit one each of 4/5/6 and 9 irons.

Hopeless to learn anything. I'd better bunk off work and play 18 tomorrow on my own.

Yours, frustrated of Shropshire.
