Was watching some old coverage on a dvd yesterday and some of the commentary was done by Alex Hay. Was a pleasant reminder of his dulcet tones, the sort of commentary that i could listen to all afternoon / evening.

There is something particularly relaxing/warm/friendly about a mild Scottish accent!

On the other hand, the central Glasgow one - especially after alcohol - can be rather threatening!

Agreed. No over-stated hyperbole. Just soft measured tones explaing what was happening in a sensible way.

Rather sadly the piece of commentary i remember the most (although i didnt actually see it at the time!) was when Greg Norman dumped his tee shot into the pond at the 16th to confirm Faldo was about to win his third Masters title:

"Oooohhhh and that's curtains."

The two best speaking voices for me are DJ Ken Bruce and Graeme Souness, who sounds just like my uncle Ronnie, who is also an Edinburgh man.
