AeroBurner Event - Wentworth - Thursday 19th March

Many thanks for organising this Jimbob - and for producing the continuous stream of goodies from your car!

Thought provoking session! The 2 clubs that went 'best' were the X-Flex Aeroburner Driver and the M-Flex Graphite iron (Aeroburner 6 I think). Shows how little flex actually matters! The UDI 3 was 'interesting' too. Not 100% convinced of the Aeroburner Fairways, but I think that's just me! My miss is high/low, so shallow (and maybe white!) faces don't seem to suit. The ones that I connected well certainly fizzed a long way! Has convinced me that a 4-wood would be an improvement over the current 3 though!

Hope I haven't put the hex on your 6-iron too!

do tell more about the UDI not seen many reviews yet

Jimbob is probably in a better position to 'tell more'! He just produced one and it went rather well - with Regular C-Taper. Looked more like a 'normal' iron than a specialist one. Easy to hit!

Cheers Jim for that, I really enjoyed it.

It could be an expensive month:o I really liked the aeroburner tp 3 wood. It's pretty long, I was getting about 230 carry off the tee from memory with a spin of around 2200. It 'felt' longer than the mini driver.

I was blow away by the rsi 2 irons. Really good to look down on, with bags of forgiveness.

Where's my credit card :)

I daren't try the Mini driver.

Thanks James, very enjoyable. Well apart from the fact I couldn't hit any of the clubs and did not register a reading. Bit like the high jump, three failures and you are out.:(

Did like the high launch three wood. 16.5 degrees loft, but same shaft length as a normal three wood. Wanted to like the hybrids, but just not for me.

I did have another hit with the RSi2 irons and they are lovely. Pro at Blackmoor has my readings from my fitting last week. Only thing that puts me off is that Therod likes them as well, and he likes shovels.

A very BIG thanks to Jimbob (James) for the invite and the countless goodies that he kept bringing back from his car (Where do you park your car at night?)

Good to meet some of the usual suspects from the forum and Adam. He hit some cracking shot, and has a very interesting grip which shapes the ball both intentionally & unintentionally. At the kickoff briefing we were told that we are in for a surprise as a European Tour player was visiting and we could meet him. About 30 mins later, imagine the surprise when the cat dragged in good ole Richart!!!

The session was in two parts - range warm up followed by time on the trackman.
I play the following: Nike driver with stiff shaft, TM Burner 3W with stiff shaft, Yonex 4 hybrid regular shaft and Burner 2.0 irons. Now for the sticks that I tried on the range...

  • Aeroburner irons..... Considering that these are replacement for Burner irons like mine, the heads feel much bigger at address. I felt them a bit heavier than my B2s. The 6i was comparable to mine. Overall not for me, but a good set.
  • RSI irons. ....Revelation #1. I hit a few RSi1 and loved it. The slots on the face are barely visible and once you are used to it, you may not even notice it. Very forgiving and I was hitting them straight down the range. Even when I mishit them, the dispersion envelop was fairly narrow. I would have it if I have the money. It was also interesting to hit the RSi with graphite shafts.
  • aeroburner drivers.... I am struggling with my long clubs, so was not trying to do anything fancy. There was a bag full of drivers and I hit a few. But i must say that I was playing cricket rather than golf as I was topping them very consistently. They make a loud 'tinny' noise which may not be for everyone. The white head also look enormous - however Adam and I compared it side by side with my Nike and it is difficult to say if the AB head is any bigger than Nike. The white paint provides a optical illusion of being too big. I absolutely flushed a 9.5 degree with stiff which was thankfully witnessed by Adam. What a great feeling!!!. I think it went longer than my Nike 11.5. Have to keep my hands in the pocket as my swing of the day was no place for testing it.
  • aeroburner woods.... I struggled on this, but more later
  • aeroburner 4 (22d) hybrids.... This was the 2nd revelation of the day. Very easy to hit and it got some distance on them. They do have a look of some older Adam hybrid (which is not surprising as Adam is owned by TM). If I decide to replace my much loved Yonex then the hybrid will be on the short list.
  • Aeroburner mini driver..... Revelation #3. I have never hit a 'mini driver'. I tee-ed it up like a 3W and it was giving similar results. Very easy to hit

Now onto the Trackman session. I had my existing 3W with Matrix Ozik White Tie stiff shaft v/s the new AB 3W. I hit both the Regular & Stiff shaft. As my swing was no good today, I struggled big time but key highlights.

  • The dispersion on my existing 3W is appalling. According to the fitter (sorry did not catch his name), he thinks the shaft is too stiff for me. My swing speed for the 3W was about 86mph. He thought my miss hits were mostly due to open face at impact as my hands are getting ahead of the club sending the ball to the right..
  • My driver has a stock stiff shaft. The fitter's view was that there was just about enuf flex in the stock shaft that I can handle it whereas the Matrix is way too stiff.
  • I struggled big time with the AB 3W with stiff shaft. far too many mishit/tops
  • I did not struggle as much with the AB 3W with regular shaft. I dont remember the figures, but on the good hits I was averaging about 205y carry. Definitely worth considering. His advice was that he would fit me with a regular shaft. (unfortunately we dont get to keep any clubs today)
  • Finally, i hit an RSi1 8-iron. W00T a club. It did a 147y carry straight down the middle - which is the same as my existing 7i!!!!! it would definitely go into the bag if I could.
Learnt a lot more about the impact of having a good shaft. James, do pass my thanks to all the staff who helped make the day successful.

Finally, here is the customary GM picture of the day... Anyone who can identify everyone will get an extra shot at the H4H next year.

Who's who in the photo?.... that me far left.

I'm glad you spotted my grip..... "strong" could be a word for it. or maybe baseball....

I don't think I know the second from the left, but after that is vkurup, Chuck Norris, therod and Richart.
Chuck Norris hit an Aeroburner 4 iron 270 yards. Nearly forum distance. Johan Carlsson I think.

Can't believe you missed Foxie out Gary, though he has been living as a wild man for a while.:)

Yes.. he is Johan Carlsson ..Swedish ..qualified from the Challenger last year and Now on the European Tour...

I suspect his chances of getting more endorsement may have been shattered due to this pic..

I don't think I've ever met Foxholer so I can be forgiven that :)

Mr. Carlsson is huge. therod is not a small guy by any means but he looks it stood there.

No wonder tour pro's drive the ball up to 15yds further than me! ;)

I was standing in a hole :o

That's a perfect way to make you feel good about yourself... Stand next to an a young fit strapping professional athlete... It must be really tough on you Rich :)

I think Johan was impressed when he found out you were 'Therod'

The Interweb states his height as 6'4... !!!

Based on what I saw yesterday, if I had to build a 'dream' bag
1) R15 Driver with stiff --> did not try it, but i think I am now a 'tinkerer', so will get fiddly very soon.
2) AeroB 3W with regular --> as per fitter advice
3) AB hybrids --> definitely
4) RS1 irons --> love it
5) No change to putter (already a TM Spider)

OMG, I would end up being a full TM poster boy..

Oi! I had contemplated removing the beard that very day! But with the temperature that day, I'm very pleased I didn't! Does confirm that 'L' in a Ping jacket is too big for me though! The 'M' I have in the golf bag is a smidgeon snug though!

And you were hardly the epitome of sartorial or coiffurial elegance!

He was pretty quick to put his arm around me.:o

Not the tall, statuesque Scandinavian blonde I had in mind, but beggars can't be choosers:)

Same on this side.. was a bit taken back by the friendliness.. (or maybe he was using me as an armrest)...

Thanks for the opportunity to try out the new Aeroburner fairway woods Jim.

After hitting several balls with my 2007 burner and then the new Aeroburner, the results were pretty compelling. Tighter dispersion and an extra 15yds carry with the latter. What I really liked about the new 3 and 5 wood, is that they felt comfortable from the word go. Perhaps not too surprising since I already use TM woods but its important to feel at home with new bats and thats how it felt.
