If you can hit a green from the rough then you find it easier to hit the green from the fairway. You will have a better lie and fewer obstacles in your way.

Pretty simple stuff really.

What I'm trying to get accross is that I'd sooner be accurate at the green end of the hole rather than the tee end, if that makes sense.
I'm happier hitting a 6 iron from light rough just off the fairway than I am with a wedge from heavy rough around the green.
That's me though as an 18 h'capper, I'm sure the better players may have a different view because they tend to be far better at scrambling.

It makes perfect sense and is very sensible. But the point I'm trying to get across is that if you work on accuracy you will build a repeatable swing that will put you on more fairways and therefore more greens. If you played at my course, you will not hit greens from the rough as it is usually thick heather that you have to hack out sideways from.

Trust me, I am working on accuracy, with every club, but I'm concentrating more on what I believe are my scoring clubs, the shorter ones.
I totally embrace the fact that accuracy off the tee is important, however, the old much used adage of 'drive for show, putt for dough' still rings true for me and many others. That's where my concentation lies at present ................ but I AM still working on my driving and will always continue to do so.

Good to see the progress is continuing. Keep working at the range and let us know how it goes on the course

I took it to a course today, what a mixed bag!
The course was sodden & playing longer than normal and the wind was very gusty & very strong too but it remained reasonably mild all afternoon. Oh, and the rough was uber rough!
I hit 6 of 13 fairways, which was great, but, lost balls off the tee on three of the others ............... two on one hole!
I lost two OOB miles right & two into the woods miles left . It was merely a question of path angles, which I eventually worked out, and managed to hit 4 of the last 5 fairways ............... and with reasonable distance too.
My irons were reasonably solid although my accuracy was a bit awry, and if a green was missed the lie was usually horrendous.
The grass was long, wet, clingy & I hated it! My ball was normally adorned by a lump of mud and that made chipping a little tricky at times. Four 3-putts didn't help either!
I shot 29 points, which I'm very satisfied with, as I donated 8 points to the golfing gods with 4 re-loads.
All in all there were signs of improvement but my swing is still very much a work in progress.
I know Rome wasn't built in a day, but I'm 55 and running out of time!
Looking forward to the next round!

Had another go on the course this week.
The weather was bitterly cold & windy, with the occasional rain, hail and thunder!
I shot 36 points off a h'cap of 18.
20 on the front and 16 on the back, my best round for some time.
I hit 6 out of 13 fairways, about 45% but only 4 of the 18 greens in regulation for about 22%, not too bad.
I took 38 putts though, which is awful, but feel my game is coming together at last.
I only lost one ball, from a horrid lie in the rough, but more significantly I had no re-loads!
First time I can remember that I've not been three off the tee at least once, I now see daylight!
There's a long way to go yet, but, when I can see the direction I seem to be heading in, it gives me hope and the incentive to push on with renewed confidence and enthusiasm............................ which is what I'm doing.

Sounds good, I would not worry so much about the putting, 20 mins in the evening whilst the missus or whoever is watching eastenders rolling a ball at a 5p piece will soon make a difference. It will drive the tv watcher mad and improve your accuracy!

While I 'sort of agree' about not worrying about the putting, this is the one area where all we ams can be (nearly) as good as the Pros! Putting (lessons and) practice REALLY works! From a pretty dodgy putter for my handicap, putting is now one of my relative strengths - just under 30/round! There is absolutely no reason why anyone up to about 24 or so (probably) can't be just as good and the discipline ofkeeping steady etc will naturally migrate to the full swing and short game areas.

So, I'd encourage players at every level to practice their putting about 3 times as much as they currently do! Of the Touring Pros I used to see at my old club, the vast majority of their time was actually spent on the Putting Green!

Point taken, thanks .

While I totally accept the fact that putting is VERY, VERY important & should be practiced more that it invariably is, I'll be leaving that until the spring, (or indoors as harpo_72 suggests), because all my practice will be used to become familiar with the swing changes that JustOne recommended a few weeks ago.
I can see them already making a difference .......................... I just want to make sure it stays that way!
