From a book I am currently reading When Bad Things Happen To Good People
Sometimes we get it wrong. But we do not make our children do anything - our children also have choices - so for instance to act or not act upon anything we might say or do. These choices are theirs to make - being able to make moral choices good or bad, right or wrong - is what makes us human.
Being a human parent can never be (that) easy. Giving birth, one of the most painful events a human body can experience, is in a sense the easiest part. Raising and teaching children, passing your values on to them, sharing their big and little hurts, being disappointed in them, knowing when to be tough and when to be forgiving - these are the painful parts of being a parent. And unlike (the) animals we can't do it on instinct alone. We have to make hard choices.
