The score line says it all but does it , I have watch and played a lot of cricket myself , it look to me like a lot of players were not interested , they lost 5-0 a few years back but that team at least had some fight , they did score 500 and lost , this team had trott go home and swann quit , yes quit in the middle of the series and most of the side quit too , it looks really bad and whats worse everyone is sayin its poor , the senior players did not do well , looks to me like they would not play for cook and lots of in fighting going on and Finn did not even get a game ??????? , why don't the press boys and botham, willis and co say it as it is , name names and tell it as it is , this is not a great aussie side , how many of the aussie team would make the best aussie team of the last 20 years , Michael Clarke maybe , I dread the one day matches , what odds on another whitewash .......................EYC

England were poor. Heads will roll and I think there could be a few international retirements. Swann leaving when he did, saying what he said showed that there wee major issues within the squad. The fall out will take a few weeks but I suspect that Cook and KP might be saying goodbye. Finn, Tremlett and Panesar won't be picked again and if they had any sense neither would Rankin. The only major positive was Ben Stokes stepping up. Plenty of young guns who will be chomping at the bit come the new county season. I suspect a vastly different squad will be taking on Sri Lanka in the summer.

The true measure of this Aussie side will be in the next few months when they tour South Africa. They remind me of England 4 years ago when they started finding their rhythm. This Australian team is settling in nicely and they are only really missing a number 6 batsman to replace Bailey. I think they will give us a run for our money and I am ever so slightly nervous about this post Kallis.

Bit harsh on Finn, hes only 23 and has best part of 100 test wickets, should be Saker getting the boot not the up and coming quicks he seems to be consistently destroying (see Meaker for another who is a fraction of the bowler he was when he joined up with England). Finn needs some time back at Middlesex to work out what works for him and to get his rhythm back, away from the England set up, where he has been pretty attrociously treated over the last couple of years.

Be amazed if Cook was to call it a day, he may give up the captaincy but expect he remains a key part of Englands test side for many a year. Wont be long for KP, may stay on for a bit but surely will be another to go the T20 mercenary root in the foreseeable future (expect andersen, broad and swann all try and finally get an ipl payday too).

As for what has happened, be plenty of column inches filled in the next few months no doubt, its pretty clear there were bigger issues than just the playing side, but the scheduling and amount of cricket some of these guys have played (and been away from home) over the last few years is definitely a large part of the problem, albeit the powers that be wont be in any hurry to admit as much

Really can't see Cook quitting or giving up the captaincy. Think KP is pretty much done with England. He'll just keep taking the big bucks of the IPL and other T20 tournaments. Think it could be it for Prior too, Bairstow is the future I believe, so if the rebuilding starts now we might aswel go all out. Can see it being something like. Cook, Carberry, Bell, Root, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Broad, Borthwick, Anderson, Finn.

Easy to say that there are plenty of young players waiting to step up but I am afraid I can't see them.
1. No spinner of Test quality.
2. Wicket-keeping seems, for some years now, to be a forgotten art with all the emphasis placed too highly upon the candidates' batting.
3. If we drop Cook & KP it would only leave Bell with any experience amongst the batsmen.
4. Only Broad of our seam/pace attack showing any form.

Who would be a selector?

As for the quality of Australia I cannot share your concerns for South Africa, the current Aussies are OK but they are not a great side.

Him not featuring at all during the test series eve when the result was settled shows that the current management have no faith in him whatsoever. Maybe with change in management he will get another crack. As for Cook, I wouldn't mind being wrong but he just looks like he has had enough.

Hes in pieces mate on all accounts, theyve messed about with his action and run up so much he doesnt know whether hes coming or going, not even at 85mph in the nets on all accounts (was over 90mph last yr). Rankin already showing signs of deterioration having been in the England set up for 6 mths too! The 2 so called specialist coaches really should be traking more flack than they are, Saker and Gooch have both damaged as many players as theyve helped imo

If "Bairstow is the future" we really are in trouble. Can't bat at this level, just look at that back foot movement that gets him out of line and his keeping is only of a decent club standard.
Yet another example of the problems caused by trying to find our own Adam Gilchrist.

Also cannot see the point of persevering with Carberry. Perhaps a few years ago but against India & Sri Lanka we should take the opportunity to reinstate Root as an opener.

Carberry isn't good enough , same with Bairstow and Ballance IMO

Totally deserved the thrashing we got. No one stood up to the plate when it was needed, no one changed up their game to suit the task in hand and no one from any part of the team were willing to take responsibility for the dire performances we dished out week in week out.
I really hope they get an equally big thrashing in the ODIs to force change in the squad and backroom staff.

What argument is there for KP to go? Best player in the team.

But doesnt play for the team only for himself - he is the most talented but too many times he throws away his wicket trying to win a personal battle with someone

What else was he meant to do this series? His best cricket is when he is fluent and cavalier and when everyone else is getting out around him he has no other choice but try to get the runs quickly. The stats back it up.

He was meant to play the solid innings and build and not give away his wicket - guide the tailenders through the innings - exactly what Bell did during the summer and the innings Haddin played. Chose cleverly when to attack or not. He hated having to dig in against Lyon and wanted to hitting himout of the park and he kept losing the battle. He cant dig out an innings.

That's like saying Alan Shearer didn't save enough penalties so Newcastle should've dropped him imo.

Its not like that at all - cricket is a better game.

How many innings of note did KP have - how many times did he dig in and get an innings together to help the team out ?

How many times did he get out going for a shot ? - pretty much every time - he is selfish - it works in a team doing well because players around him contribute and give him a platform and he can go for his shots but he is a number 4 - when the top 3 go tumbling you want him to get stuck in and play the paitent innings building an innings not trying to out do the bowler in some personal battle.
