Russell should have received a penalty for smashing Max off the track in that incident. He was absolutely not making turn 1 until he used the Red Bull as an additional brake. I have no idea what they were thinking on the pit wall telling Max to let Russell past to avoid a possible penalty.

But that said, Max's behaviour from then on was a disgrace. Personally, I think deliberately hitting another car should be a race ban. I know very few drivers ever get hurt these days when they crash, but racing cars at the speed they do is dangerous. You can't have drivers losing the head and deliberately crashing into each other.

Two possibilities:

1. Max isn't actually a human being and somehow manages to extract silly levels of performance from a dog of a car.
2. The team focuses all of its efforts on Max so his side of the garage gets everything it wants and the other side is just surviving on the scraps.

My money is on #2.

I think it's a bit of both!

What on earth do Red Bull do to their second car? Their No. 2 drivers surely can't be that consistently awful

Listening to a couple of the ex F1 racers commentating their view is that any other driver would struggle with the car that is set up for Max as his driving style is so different. Often has happened in F1 with priority of set up/build done for the No1 driver.

There were some amazing skills shown by some who spun in the wet and got back on the track.

Aquaplaning is a very scary experience just as an on the road driver.

the big revelation is the driver helmet cam... i wont be able to see a thing thru it, let alone react to anything. They seem to be so low, how do they know when they need to take a corner rather than just drive straight

It was mad watching them drive so fast with such limited visibility and treacherous conditions under the tyres

First time I have watched a Grand Prix from start to finish in a while

And Piastri got what he deserved for his stupidity behind the safety car.
To be honest this confused me, the leader has the right to back everything up. There is no regulation that says he must be x meters behind the safety car or x seconds ..
Max just made it look bad and then had a little moan .. but then showed his class by spinning.
There was some comment about his braking being far greater and that was the reason for the penalty .. but I still don’t really understand it.
Hulkenberg getting his podium was good, he won GP2 when I took over as technical lead. He seemed destined for good things but he basically got a load of rubbish drives .. F1 or motorsport is about money not talent and there are number of drivers you can name who really bought a seat.
I was very pleased to hear Kubica had won at Le Mans he was so good in the BMW Sauber .. very intelligent and sharp. He was the one who nick named Sebastian Vettel Stef and the whole team would call Vettel stef ( he was only 17 -18 at the time) and answered to stef as well .. when he moved to torro rosso they called him stef as well .

Come on guys, disappointed we haven't yet had a conspiracy theory about wanting to close up the points gap between Oscar and Lando 😅

Piastri's heavy braking did seem a tad excessive, but no way deserved a 10s penalty, which absolutely eliminated any chance of winning. If they'd dished out 5s, he might have been able to pull it off.

Thoughts on the direction F1 is headed under its current Saudi leadership appreciated. 👍

In the dry it would be excessive, but with such poor visibility behind the car in front I think it was valid.

I’m sure there are rules on how close you have to stay, it was mentioned in the commentary during the race.
Agree that 10 seconds seems excessive when you get the same for causing a crash but maybe this shows that one of the penalties is too lenient?

As the lead car, you can't accelerate (making it look like you are pushing back to race pace), and then suddenly brake heavily. That can be extremely dangerous, and cause pile ups behind worst case.

Visually it looked bad, commentators suspected he'd be in trouble, and he was penalised. The stewards would have had the data as well, which obviously backed up how it looked.

I've no issue with a 10 s penalty. A 5 s penalty can often be a risk worth taking, especially if lead car is a lot quicker than those behind.

But, 10s penalties for drivers that look to intentionally crash into others, or make a move where the chance of a collision are highly probable, are way too lenient in my view. They should have 10 s stop and go, or even DQed in extreme cases

I’m sure there are rules on how close you have to stay, it was mentioned in the commentary during the race.
You have to stay within 10 car lengths of the car in front (which is the safety car if you're the leader) while the safety car has its lights on.

Once the safety car turns its lights off, the leader gets to set the pace and is allowed to fall way back (indeed is expected to) to give himself room to boot it at a time of his choosing.

The safety car lights went out at a very late part of the lap, when it would be reasonable to assume there was going to be another lap behind the safety car. It gave Piastri very little time to establish the gap he required, which might explain why he braked so hard.

The common theme in all of these controversial incidents is that the FIA, stewards and race director seem unable to act consistently.

Not sure of the rules

But from watching it the braking seemed to be sharp enough to cause the car behind to have to go past and in poor visibility that seemed a poor move that could have caused a crash

There was talk in after show that the move was very similar to one that George Russell did in another Grand Prix but there was no punishment

Same driver behind as well
