It has always been that way as far as I remember, certainly in golf events like the Ryder Cup. There are other habits as well, like saying "the game of golf" when just "golf" would do

I think it started with a Team USA at an Olympics in the 1990’s. As time has gone on it’s become “Team” this and that but only when the Americans are involved.

And please, please will someone pull the plug on the music blaring from behind the first tee?

It annoys me most at the Olympics where since 2012 we've become 'Team GB' instead of Great Britain for some reason.

Recall a fair while ago listening to Jack, along the lines of -
"I enjoy coming to this golf tournament, it's a fine golf course, and my golf swing was working well today".

Nohing wrong with it, just sounded odd to me.

They couldnt (at that time anyway. who knows, things may get worse...) brand 'Great Britain'. But could brand 'Team GB' as a licensing and merchandising strategy. Commercialisation at it worst I agree.
