A 5 club comp is painful enough Amanda .... a 2club and a putter comp I would choose ..... an awayday to a different club!

In the 3 club comp at my home course I used a Driver, my chipper which is 7 iron loft and putter length, aswell as a putter for a laugh. Ended up with 33 points when my highest was 29 in the previous 3 months! driver off the tee and long par 3's, chipper from 10-175 yards and putter to finish, shot a 82 on a par 70 course. Since that day it has made me realise that you do not need lots of clubs and dropped 2 wedges, 4 iron and the 3 wood from my bag, In the bag now are Driver, 24 hybrid, 5-sw and chipper and now back to playing to my handicap of 9.

Kind of what David said!! Figured I'd give it a go once and then decide if my time would have been better spent elsewhere :) Might have a sneaky practice beforehand though !!

Plus I get to look like a proper golfer and carry my bag! Don't know what it is but when I see a woman carrying I always think "hmmm, bet she can play"...

Was thinking the same but then thought ...it says same loft as a 7i - was he hitting it with a full swing? 160 yards with a chipper - now that would be an impressive shot!

I used to play with a mate, who hit his chipper anything up to 130 yards, made me shudder everytime he did it and that was when i was a 24 handicapper, though he never had a handicap or wanted one.

My playing partners keep saying the same, learn your wedges they add. I have not got the time for that and have used a chipper from 24 handicap down to nine. I like this shot and went through about 5 before i found this current chipper, an awesome club, a Howson true contact model, putter length and between 7 and 8 loft, speciality club for me now with lots of practice, I use it normally for shots from 5 to 100 yards and from below 25-30 yards I normally leave it in the dustbin lid. In the 3 club comp last year I was getting 140 yards but this year hit a 280 yard drive on the first leaving 175 yards, took the chipper out and stuck it to 6ft from the pin! I do not care if its not orthodox, it does not show what clubs I use on the 4 over gross scorecards! This particular model is sparce now so have another as a spare!

So do you not carry and wedges?

What do you use out of a bunker?

I have in my bag a Ft-i driver, Titliest 909 24 degree hybrid, Mp-53 5-pw and a mp-t10 56 degree wedge, chipper and putter. mp wedge is used when i need to go over hazards, opening it up and used for anything up to 110 yds, chipper when a clear run into the green. The chipper is so easy to use, 7 loft and putter length, line is always good and just need to learn distance control, as a rule anything under 25 yards i aim to land halfway between ball position and pin. I have tried carrying a few different lofted wedges but it just complicates things. I believe its easier for the amateur to master a 56 degree wedge by using it for 10-100 yds by practice, opening it up for lob shots, than it is to have 3-4 wedges in the bag, one 56 degree wedge can cover everything and just my personal preference.

Check the rules of the comp. Is it a 3 club challenge? I have played in them before and just took my 18 degree TM rescue to rip from the tee and putt with, then took a 7 iron and sand wedge as like you said they are my favorite chipping clubs and should sort me over most distances. In all honesty I have never been that far from my handicap when doing this either. Why do we carry all those clubs??????????

Defo 2 clubs and 1 putter or I'd leave the latter behind as I currently wield it in some bizarre manner which precludes the ball getting near the hole !!
