Anyone done this for the courses they've played?

I was bored yesterday so I thought I'd try to list all the courses I've played. Then when I'd done that I thought it would be a good idea to try to rank them into some sort of order.

It was harder than I thought it would be. The hardest part was trying to ignore reputation, but even though I knew I was doing it I still allowed it to happen.

So, anyone else done it?
Was it just gut feel, or points for different factors then total them up, or something else?

I created a list of all courses I played some 10 years ago and kept it tidy ever since. it is grouped by contries but I never did any rating because what should I rate

- quality of design?
- visual appeal?
- mainatainence?
- weather?
- did I play well or not?

Believe it or not the last point does affect how you liked a course at the end of the day, doesn't it

not done this formally and certainly couldnt remember every where ive played but went through something similar yesterday with Amanda when she asked where I thought were must play courses within say 90 mins of us. quite disappointing how few there actually are from where we are based, now if the question had been scotland or further south things wouldve been far easier :)

I don't really play many other courses at the moment, I have played most around my area. When I was travelling I used to play when an opportunity arose. I have played on most of the major continents except South America, that was on my to do list. So to list where, here goes... North America, Europe (easy that one.. France and Spain) , Asia (Malaysia ) , China, Bahrain , and Australia
As for ranking them, no, my games were snatched and enjoyed, because of the opportunity.
As for local uk stuff, kind of like to play somewhere 3 times if its reasonable before scoring on it, if its a mud hole then I won't return.

- weather?
- did I play well or not?

Definitely agree with both those points as being major factors in how you remember a course. I've never gone through and officially ranked the courses I've played but could give a list of ones I really enjoyed playing at: Hillside, S&A, Southerness, Brabazon, Roxburghe, Ganton, th'Uddersfield.

If I had to pick one to go on top it would probably be Hillside but very closely followed by Southerness (played well all 3 times I've been there and the weather was always fantastic)

I looked at where ive played this season and tried ranking them but its just too hard to do.

Best I could do was put them into brackets of top class, good, average etc.

Best: Royal County Down and Sunningdale.

Worst - not sure I can remember the worst. There was one near Uttoxeter that I remember being very poor. Also played at Bicester Country Club a fortnight ago and I thought that was absolutely rubbish.

Loving the fact that someone is bigging up one if my courses. Southerness is very enjoyable on days and brutal other days. Shot 93 there the other week in medal.

Back to topic I've not played many courses but I'd have to say Fidra at Archerfield is the best I've played. Not kept a list but may try and sort one out.

ok,

Here, in no particular order, are some I've REALLY enjoyed, as opposed on only really enjoyed

Machrie on Islay
Reay on the North coast
Gullane Nr 1
St Andrews New
Goswick

and of course my own track since January, North Berwick West Links.

They say that the rank of a great course is that you can play it once and remember every hole.

My top three

Muirfield
Turnberry Ailsa
Sunningdale Old.

I have been lucky to play Muirfield and Turnberry many times and Sunningdale four or five times.

No way could I remember all of the courses I have played, they have all been in England and Scotland though.

Jealous your a member at north Berwick lovely course

Hopefully get to play it again

I've never thought of ranking the courses I've played... too many for that but I do have some firm favourites. The favourites list is split into two distinct groups. Links Courses and the rest.

Favourite links... probably Carnoustie, especially for its structured finish. But that would be closely followed by Silloth because every hole offers opportunities.

Favourite parkland... The Hotchkin at Woodall Spa - its beat me every time I've visited but I still like going back for more.

Least favourite was Ingol, near Preston. Thankfully, its now a housing estate. I lost a bucket load of balls there in the middle of the fairways. It was a pudding of a course when it was wet.
