Yer dads car.

My mum had a Citroen 2CV with the roll back fabric roof. When we were 6 or 7 me and my brother used to stand on the back seat holding on to the metal cross support and wave at people as we drove along. Don't think you'd get away with that now. Even the police would wave back as we passed.

I have one for you.

Ford Zephyr, maroon.

Taken at gunpoint from my dad's work - it was the one nearest the gate of the car park - by a loyalist terrorist who put a bomb in the back seat and headed off to bomb somewhere. He didn't know about the dodgy suspension and going over a rough road, the detonator went off. Killed the car but he survived. We saw our car on the TV news that evening.

Demolished ?. Do tell, but choose your next sentence carefully, you may get an infraction ?

It was a cold foggy January night, 1981. I was 19 and had just dropped a mate home after Venture Scouts (they went up to 21 in those days)

The windscreen started misting up, grabbed a rag and promptly dropped it.

Whilst trying to locate it I took my eyes off the road and found myself on a collision course with a parked van.

Evasive action, missed the van which was a miracle, but went into a spin and through a garden brick wall. Fortunately nobody was injured.

Was quite rightly done for driving without due care & attention.

Not my best day ?

My dad only ever had 1 car - 1938 Austin 12 (CSP709). It was put up on blocks every winter. I learnt to drive on it, driving 8 miles or so every Sunday with my sister and boyfriend to a church where he played the organ while I read the Sunday papers. I remember many Sunday outings with 6 or 7 of us in the car, especially good were the wild raspberry picking trips in the summer.

I can only really remember two. The first was a left hand drive VW Camper Van we came back from Germany with (I was born there as Dad in the army). We had some amazing camping holidays in that. The other was a yellow avenger with a brown vinyl roof. I thought it was the business and very sporty. Sadly the monkeys at Woburn Abbey took a liking to it and started peeling it off!

I honestly don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Deffo covered under 3rd part fire and theft.

Think my Dad's first car was a Morris Oxford, or the Austin equivalent.

But the one that always brings a smile to my face was a Mk II Escort he had which was somewhat rusty in the sills (massive holes) so he used some wooden bits from an old sideboard and copious amounts of fiberglass to repair it.
Not long after he'd got rid of it he was contacted by the police as it'd been used as a getaway car!

Complete list would be something like

Cortina
Vauxhall Viva Estate
Vauxhall Victor Estate
Mini traveller
Austin MG metro
Volkswagen golf / jetta / vento repeat repeat
Nissan Quashqai

My dad bought a brand new Triumph Herald estate. Sensible car for a man with a wife and 2 very young kids. A short time later he swapped it for a Triumph TR4A, 2 seater with a tiny bench seat in the back. Not a sensible car for a man with a wife and 2 very young kids ?‍♂️

I have seen photos of an Opel Manta. That was before the car got the negative image in Germany. I remember an Audi 100, Mitsubishi Cold, 2 Ford Sierra, and a Ford Mondeo.
Might have something to do with my uncle having a Ford workshop which also explained my Fiesta I mentioned elsewhere.

One for Ethan really, or probably his dad.

Did insurance cover terrorist action during the Troubles? I remember seeing lots of cars, as well as offices and shops getting blown to bits on the news. That wouldn't do your No Claims Bonus any favours

Stuff blown up like that was covered by the Govt in NI. I think it took a long time to get it, and we eventually got a second hand Hillman Hunter.

In fact, now that I remember it, when I was 15 or 16, a well-off uncle got a new Cortina Mk V, with the nice 2 door style. He told me that he would give me the car if I passed my driving test. About 6 months later, before I did my driving test, it was taken by the IRA and used to blow up the supermarket in the centre of town. I let it go.

He was a Ford Cortina fan - though his first car was an Austin Somerset and between Cortina Mk2 and Mk4 he has a Citroen DS19. Now that Citroen was dead cool. The Somerset overheated on the Fenwick Moor the first time he took us for a run...would have been 1965. The Citroen broke down on the M6 with us all in it on a trip to relatives in Southport - it never got going again.
