you might be quite fit mate but you sound like a really irritating little man (sorry, meant knob).

My back is not in great shape - possibly a result of carrying a lot of heavy stuff, strapped to my body plus a rifle, in fairly unpleasant places - while you were being tough at home deciding what ball to play.

Get real, it's attitudes like yours that means golf still has got a bit of a rep of being the bastion of stuffy, pompous dinosaurs

I think Snelly's tongue may have been somewhere in his cheek. That's a touch of an over reaction.

He won't say it but thank you for saving us all, we are truly grateful. ;)

There must be something in the water in Scotland this week. :D

but there comes a point when they ought to be carrying.

and why is that?

because imo (and it is only my opinion), you only really get to 'feel' a course that way. (buggies of course are a blight)

I have both a carry bag and an electric, for 18 holes, unless it's rugged or in competition I prefer to carry; a comp or a 36-hole day it's electric all the way

Im overweight, hence the reason I took up Golf and theres no way I could carry a bag for 18 holes at my home course. 5 holes are up hill with very steep gradiant and I do struggle even with a push trolley. I have carried my cart bag around various other courses with no issues so I feel its 'horses for courses'. I will be buying an electric trolley next and in the winter I will try a light weight stand bag and half set of clubs for social rounds and see how I get on.

No need for thanks, the pension is sufficient in that regard ;) (well nearly)

Perhaps I did overreact but I do find the 'macho' train of thought regarding this issue a bit pathetic to be honest.

Each to their own - ping users fought 2 world wars so that we could have such freedoms of choice!

BTW I just ripped the thin insoles out of my shoes and replaced them with nice gel filled ones - should I be using a pink bag? :D

you should be ashamed ! gel filled insoles, you should use broken glass, wrapped in barbed wire, that would make a man of you!

I dont recall saying I was macho because I carry.
I merely said I think juniors would be fitter and healthier if they carried instead of being driven to and dragged around the course.
I didnt say they were wrong, just my opinion and if you think wanting the youngsters of today to be fit and healthy is pathetic then I dont have much more to say on the matter.
Do what you want but dont call me pathetic for having an opinion.

This old Chestnut comes out to play every few weeks doesn't it..?

We'll never get an accord, No compromise.....

If ANYONE who plays Golf wants/can afford/is given or otherwise obtains a trolley - electric or otherwise - or wants to carry - I couldn't give a flyer.

I doubt very much that you would get much fitter/slimmer by carrying than walking with a trolley. It's a 5 mile walk. If you want to use it as a fitness thing then "Yomp" across the fairways and get your round played in under 30 minutes.
As has been said, to get fit - go to a Gym, eat less to get slimmer.
If a Junior wants to protect their backs then what's the issue? If they want to carry - let 'em

Next!

For what it is worth, I have carried since day one of picking up a club. This included playing a course week in and week out that mountain goats would baulk at, back then I used a mizuno tourbag too. I did try a leccy trolley for a few weeks but found it more hassle than help. My back has never once given any twinges nor pains. In my mind it has actually helped strengthen my back over the time.

Golf is a sport, just like darts, snooker and tennis.
As well as being outside breathing fresh air, I am competing against other guys while trying to beat the course at the same time. Some guys (more the majority these days) prefer to make the game as less strenuous as possible, well that is up to them, to me I'll carry until my doctor says not to.

And that's your choice Brendy.

It just agravates me when people have a go at those who don't do things they way they do. Trolley or carry - it's irrelevent, it's a choice.

Nobody's ever going to get fit playing Golf.

It's personal preference matey, it's like those mizuno losers who will never loosen their grip long enough to try other brands :D
For reference (seriously for a minute) I lost three stone before i met the wife through playing golf 4 times a week, mostly evening times and once on a Saturday.

Screw it. Why not carry 28 clubs (declaring 14 out of play naturally), and sprint between shots. The long hitters won't be laughing then!

I used to get annoyed seeing juniors with leccy trolleys. Thinking about it though it wasn't that I thought they should be carrying because they were fit to.

It was the fact the shiny new trolley usually carries a top end bag, filled with the latest clubs and they play with Pro V1 balls regardless of handicap all bought by mummy and daddy because diddums just learned to wipe his own ass.

Then I'd look at my second hand, epoxy repaired motocaddy, cheap Dunlop bag and contents all of which I bought with my hard earned money, working additional shifts so I can get a new club without the guilt of affecting the household budget. Walking around on my creaky knees (at 30!). While the aforementioned diddums with healthy joints, looks at me in a way that screams, "what is that riff raff doing here".

So really it's a lot more green eyed monster.

Do people honestly care what other families/people spend their money on? Who gives a stuff what kit juniors, or anyone else for that matter, has?

.....and you try telling that to the young kids of today, they won't believe you!

Monty python 1980's

I guess juniors with trollies can look bad, but if it works for them, and their parents or they can afford it, why not.

I have a pk which i use in the summer, they are not permitted in winter at Galgorm. I carry all winter and for evening practice in summer.
I play golf for enjoyment, not fitness, so if can use the pk, I do. I work 12 hour shifts, in a physically demanding job which helps my fitness, if i want more cardio work, i use my exercise bike, not the golf course.

For reference (seriously for a minute) I lost three stone before i met the wife through playing golf 4 times a week, mostly evening times and once on a Saturday.

And that's almost all down to walking 20 miles a week.
Carrying wouldn't have made much difference to it.
Well done though - maybe I can try this one on HID. Let me play 4 times a week and I'll lose weight..!! :D :D

So the poll so far is 2-1 in favour of juniors having electric trolleys.
I'll just keep keep quiet in future
 :(

I am 100% with you Bob.

I can't understand why more people don't carry their clubs. It is easier, less hassle and gives you a better level of exercise.

Juniors with tour bags and trolleys is just ridiculous.

All the comments on this thread about bad backs, needing to carry lots of stuff, bags to heavy etc. You need to toughen up a bit. Your posts read like a mothers meeting for the infirm, weak and soft! :D

As a lad between the ages of 10 and 15, I played 18-36 holes a day for 3 out of 5 days midweek during the summer holidays. I carried a full set in a pencil bag every day and was absolutely fine. The weight of my bag was never a thought that entered my head. There were probably 20 of us that all did this regularly and we were all fit as fiddles. The thought of having a trolley would have been met with total ridicule!

Then again, we were growing up in Yorkshire. Maybe some of these posts are from southerners who are genetically weaker perhaps? :D Or perhaps we were too tight to fork out for a trolley? :D

I still carry now as I don't need loads of stuff and am pretty fit. And I love beating people who have all the gear and no idea too.... :D :D :D

Oh dear.

I am not sure you quite took my post in the spirit it was intended Stevie.
