Why would you invite someone to be a member whose dress is inappropriate?
“How does someone decide what’s inappropriate” if there is no dress code

On what planet are “sports socks” white ankle socks inapproriate when playing a sportYou don't decide you know.
It is very clear from even a casual reading of this thread that basically everyone knows that things like wearing hats indoors football tops or white ankle socks are inappropriate but some feel they can 'get away with it when visiting other members clubs.'
Why on earth would you want to have a guest who feels they can get away with dressing poorly when they come to visit?
Most formal wedding invites or the Bride & Groom will let their guests know.I suppose it’s like going to a wedding or funeral.
Generally you know what to wear or not to wear.
Unless otherwise asked
Lots of sports, how many rugger teams league or union wear white ankle socks, fine for tennis or badminton inappropriate for golf.On what planet are “sports socks” white ankle socks inapproriate when playing a sport
As far as I am aware there are only a handful of clubs in the UK who think white ankle socks are inappropriate. You don't decide you know.

If I received an invite to a wedding without any indication of dress then I would turn up in a suit, depending on weather with or without jacket and depending on my mood with or without tie. Most formal wedding invites or the Bride & Groom will let their guests know.
Saying absolutely nothing and setting someone up for a fall is just ignorant.

Yes, but if they wanted you to only wear black shoes and not brown, they would have to tell you that wouldn't they? Similarly, you would probably wear golf clothes to a golf course, but any specificities around sock-wear would have to be communicated. If I received an invite to a wedding without any indication of dress then I would turn up in a suit, depending on weather with or without jacket and depending on my mood with or without tie.
I think most blokes would do the same.

Let’s be honest, you’d ask the missus, we can’t make such big decisions on our own.If I received an invite to a wedding without any indication of dress then I would turn up in a suit, depending on weather with or without jacket and depending on my mood with or without tie.

How dare you. I’m a grown man and I’ll choose what clothes to wear.Let’s be honest, you’d ask the missus, we can’t make such big decisions on our own.![]()
I can only think of Rye and New Zealand as not allowing ankle socks with shorts. No idea why, but that's their business. I wear long trousers when I play there. If you don't want to do that, that's fine, but your loss, as both are wonderful courses.
There may be others, but it's rare these days. We all have different ideas of what smart looks like. If the course warrants it, I'm flexible.
But generally, we all know what "golf clothing" is. Wearing the right kit to play sport isnt that radical really.
The only other one I've played recently who didn't allow ankle socks was Blackwell. On a side note the scruffiest and rudest people we saw on the course that day were members.I can only think of Rye and New Zealand as not allowing ankle socks with shorts.
