I have now been unable to hit a golf ball for about two weeks and have no idea what's going on! I'm topping some, hitting others with the heel of the club, slicing some.... i have no idea how this has happened. I wasn't duffing one shot a month ago.

The problem now is that i'm thinking i'm going to hit a bad shot before i've even addressed it. Even with a nice slow practise swing i still thrash at the ball when playing my shot.

I'm going to head over the range tonight, slow everything right down, shorten my swing and just try and get some of this confidence back. :(

I went through the same thing about 4 months ago, It’s horrible, thinking your going to play bad is the worst thing you can do.

Just go to the range tonight and have some fun don’t try and hit targets etc just play about.

You got a nice set up of clubs by the way, but I don’t recognise the 5 wood?

Minty,

The game's like that, I'm afraid. Peaks and troughs, swings and roundabouts.

I can go for 3 or 4 months playing like a twit then play brilliantly for the next 3 or 4. It's usually just mindset and confidence. A good session at the range or one good score can be the turning point, so I hope you have a good one.

When i started I bought a £140 set of Memphis clubs, real bog standard ones. I bought the new gear but have become attached to the old 5wood, it's staying with me for life i think.

Its a tough one.

Maybe time to have a lesson and get the fundamentals checked.

If it's that bad it could be the grip, the stance, ball position and all the other setup basics that set the swing.

Good luck sorting it out and let us know if (and most importantly ) when you get a breakthrough.

It's one of the many frustrations of golf that you can never 'bank' anything.

The fact that you now think your going to duff every shot is no doubt a big factor.

As suggested, go see the pro, he should sort you out.

One of the things i've noticed is that if i'm playing well , striking the ball consistently and feeling happy with my game , i have to concentrate doubly hard to hold that form. It seems like i get lazy and forget to do the simple things properly. I can 'switch off' . forgetting all the good tips i've learnt and all the routines i've been using , almost as if my subconcious is saying....
" This game is easy...you've cracked it"

Go back to the basics. Forget about scoring , pars etc and just think about your swing and consistent ball strike

If it's any help to get your confidence restored, just swing the club through the ball and let the motion do the work. Keep doing that until you're not hitting at the ball but just making it incidental in the swing path. Then apply some more force keeping the grip pressure low.

The idea is that you start to remember what it's like to hit a ball and that you can actually do it. Even if it's a 100yrd 7 iron, you'll soon feel better about it.
