Worm Casts

TB in cattle when I embarked on my agricultural career was pretty close to be eradicated but now in the dairy counties it's rife and we need to control it , sorry but the badgers are the main culprits so need to be controlled.

Vaccinate the cattle We vaccinate people and don't control (ie kill) human carriers.

Surprisingly the main emphasis would appear to have been in finding a badger vaccination, rather than one for cattle! We are told that real progress has been made yet a vaccination for cattle is STILL not available as efforts have, instead, been concentrated on a vaccine for badgers.

Vaccination of cattle against TB is currently prohibited by EU legislation, principally because BCG (Bacille Calmette Guerin) vaccination can interfere with the tuberculin skin test, the most commonly used diagnostic test for TB in cattle.

Yes I know that but my point was that the bulk of research funding is going into badger vaccination not cattle vaccination.

Current evidence suggests that the majority of BCG vaccinated animals (cattle), greater than 90% will revert to test-negative status within 1 year.

Further, in this parliament (2010-15), the coalition government is spending £24.6m on the development of cattle and badger TB vaccines. Over the next decade, according to Defra the cost of TB in cattle is projected to rise to £1bn.
Seems like the cost of development is far outweighed by the benefit

far as I'm aware the vaccine is available but field scale trials have been.held back , cost and legislation so that is why the badger vaccine has been .given more emphasis. From a farming perspective we'd welcome anything to get rid of TB

Interesting subject creep in this thread! We have gone from worm casts to vaccinating cattle in less than 30 posts! :mmm:

It was this post that caused that!

We are also having that problem again, but with badgers. Apparently they are digging for grubs. In our part of the world badgers are a protected species, despite the badger culls in the West Country.

H
According to our course manager, whatever they have been using to deter or kill worms has been banned for agricultural use by the EU. About 95% of it was used for agricultural purposes and 5% for golf courses. Apparently the manufacturers have.decided that it is not economic to make it in smaller amounts just for golf courses. :mmm:

What was the product?

I'd have thought it was more like 99.95% Agriculture and 0.05% Golf too!
