We have a comp tomorrow (individual stableford) which I signed up for but realised on Wed morning I would be unable to play. I advised the comps secretary and have been told I must write a letter to the ladies committee explaining my actions...

Your thoughts?

Utterly archaic, comps secretary far too much self importance, its a hobby not life or death!

We can cancel entry into our comps up until the morning of the comp (cancellation sheet under tee times when posted) or just ring up on the morning of the comp and talk to the comps sec and cancel with no inquisition or retribution

un-fecking-believable

Methinks your letter should be one of resignation- join a club in the 21st century

More than a bit OTT to me. My club only get the hump if they are informed too late to offer the slot to someone else. Plans and circumstances change all the time and what may seem like something I can do one day may not be possible the next. I would not be happy sending letters every time my plans changed as, believe it or not, golf is well down my list of priorities. Besides, it really is none if the clubs business why I cannot take part in a comp, all they need to know is that I cannot make it and I told them as soon as I know. Too many clubs treat members like school kids

OTT. The BRS system is open until 4pm on the Friday before the comp and you just remove your name. Following 4pm you just ring the pro shop.

Not just me who thinks it's outrageous then :-) I'm told the ladies committee decided it was required so the secretary is the messenger - albeit no doubt a major force in instigating such a rule.

That's exactly my plan Jim and will see if it's demanded again when not forthcoming. Then will see what the punishment is for refusing to comply!

Punishment!!!! Wtf is going on. bet you dont have to write a letter asking them to take your subs

Crazy stuff in 2014..........a letter, who the hell deals in letters for this sort of thing..plus you have given them 3 days notice.
I take it the comp sec is a 85 year old 'lady who lunches'.

What happens on the morning of the comp if you wake up with a migraine?
Do you have to send a doctors note.

speaks volumes! and indicative of many 'ladies' sections across the country, law unto themselves, clique and offputting to any new members wanting to join.

If its a rule of the club to write in, then do so. However, I'd add a second paragraph asking that the ladies section consider adopting a more modern approach to managing their start sheets. If you're confrontational, the shutters will come down and they'll close ranks.

No, she's late 40's. I just can't work out our ladies section at all and the committee has some very strong-minded (aka bossy) individuals who seem to be on some power trip or something. I'm at the stage where I want nothing to do with them as a whole and will play golf when I want to and with whom I want to - imagine even thinking I can pay my subs and do that?!

Write a letter and place it in the card box ... Probably won't get seen until after the comp is finished, and will be worthless at that point, showing up that the system is useless.

two sides to this and only one is being represented (although GB72 touched on the other)...

let's look at the principles first
1. some clubs do not have enough tee times available to meet all competition demand
2. this is an even bigger issue if you include time preferences over and above absolutes of space/no-space
3. they put together booking in arrangements they consider equitable (whether everyone else does sometimes varies!)

so at one point they have a solid field of 3 balls with players moaning they can't play

next minute they have individuals standing on the tee wondering if they have any playing partners, and possibly ending up as a 2 ball in a field of 3's (no fun at all)

so there are inquests, procedures, etc implemented (or more often dug up as they had previously been implemented until the issues eased. committees under pressure to be seen to be doing something etc

those that had fallen into the habit of entering everything and crying off at the last minute when they check their diaries, the weather or whatever mend their ways as they face the requirements placed on them for crying off, and the one off situations inevitably caught up in the process feel victimised and hard done by.

personally I would have quickly emailed the comp sec with the explanation rather than posting to a forum; but that's just me.

edit - this post was started about 8 posts ago so doesn't take into account subsequent ones; and it's focused on the principle not the implementation. I would tend to agree with the view that the requirement for 'a letter' is somewhat OTT :)

It's not a club rule and David is on the men's committee and thinks it hilarious even thinking that would get approved. I agree about the confrontational element though and don't want to totally ostracize myself.
