I'm a sub for a winter league side on Saturday, and it'll be my first matchplay team game. Any tips, tactics, rules variants I should be aware of so that I don't make myself look like a complete div :)

Mate, go out there and play to the very best of your ability. No one can ever ask anymore of you, relax and enjoy it. If anyone gets on your back about anything ask yourself do you really wanna play with a team like that anyway?

whatever else, remember where you get shots, as in don't give up on a hole until you positively cannot win it.

don't get coerced into giving putts too easily, there is nothing to say to have to give any. look at what he has to do. if you are given one, pick it up, smile and say thank you - don't get into the 'I'll just finish it', you'll miss one and blow your confidence.

it's pairs Jammy, and I've not met my partner yet, but played well with the guy I'm subbing for, last Sat. Hadn't met him before either, but he must have seen something in my game as he asked me there and then.

don't forget you can choose which of you tees off, even putts first. so if you feel comfortable with it, if he's more experienced let him play captain.

Let your partner captain. Concentrate on the things you can control i.e. your own ball but don't get too intense or too worried about the scores. In matchplay if you win a hole with a 10 a win is a win. Play your normal game and don't be tempted to play any risky shots and hope it comes off or your partner will do the work. Do what you do regularly and which got you the pick to start with. Above all enjoy the challenge. That feeling of wanting to rush to the loo seconds before you head to the tee is natural. Stand over the first drive and have a clear thought of where its going. Swing smoothly, pick up your tee and acknowledge the good shot comments.

All good advice lads - cheers. Looking forward to it actually. Got nothing to lose really, and as I'm down as a sub for anyone, I should get a good mix of rounds and people to close my first year at the club...
