Winter golf, is it really worth it.........

I have 2 choices......

1. Go play golf in the cold/wind/rain....

or

2. Stay at home with the Mrs and probably end up going shopping...

I like Winter golf!!!
Exactly my thoughts as well.

Well, I've not exactly taken the winter off, but prior to yesterday the last time I played was December 6th, with just a couple of practice sessions in-between. Yesterday I felt like I'd not played for years! Clearly I can't afford breaks in my golf playing and yet I can hardly afford to play as regularly as I need to...

Stupid game.

The secret is to not take it too seriously.
Enjoy being out in the fresh air getting a bit of exercise and not being in work or dragging around the shops.
I hate to think how rusty I'd feel if I parked the clubs Nov 30 and picked them up again March 30.....

Nutshell it is in ^^^^^^^^

Having spent two weeks at the end of last year playing in Mauritius, I am really starting to lose my mojo for winter golf. For the first time ever I can really see why some just park the clubs at the end of October and don't bother until march April.

Soggy fairways, velcro rough, temporary greens and 5 layers of clothing just seems like such a slog to play at the moment. A good swing can feel like an absolute hack, a nice drive plugs in the first cut and you never find it......

Is it really worth it.......... ?

Whats the alternative?
Not playing on a golf course for 4/5 months?
I think as a few people have said just don't take it seriously just get out there enjoy yourself.

I last played on the 28th of December. It was freezing and the ground was white as we had a deep frost. The ball was hitting the green and going 30 yards up in the air, putting was a joke and you could not see your ball due to the conditions. I loved it though as was out with my mates, in the fresh air having a laugh. At the same time, keeping the swing going and enjoying the laugh, with the knowledge that come the warmer months, it will all be useful and I won't be picking up the clubs 'green'.

On top of that, if you get lucky and the weather is cold but sunny, not much better places than a golf course.

Its just a walk round , I only play if its dry , not to bothered about the cold , but both cold and wet , no thanks , take the wife shopping but sit in the car be better or just drop her and come home and collect her later

What are these things you speak of?

I like winter golf. It is usually the only time I can get the ball to stop dead on the green like the pros :)

Except when they're frozen, and it's like trying to get the ball to land and stop on an ice rink.

Indifferent to winter golf. I'll play, because I couldn't go 5 months without playing, but there's nothing better than strolling around a golf course in the sun, warm, and without the need for 15 layers to avoid freezing. Summer golf is just so much better, especially abroad.

I played this afternoon, the ground was very wet, but I enjoyed it, hit some good shots and some bad ones but far better than being stuck indoors.

I'm lucky living on the coast that the course drains so well (not a links but on sandy soil). Full greens open unless frosty so winter golf is more like the real thing than my previous, parkland, course with balls plugging everywhere etc.

I don't take the golf too seriously, just nice to get out for some fresh air and a laugh on a playable course but always play right through the year.

I play all year through and enjoy Winter golf. My 3 main reasons for playing are:-
1. For the sheer enjoyment.
2. It keeps my swing and feel going, plus able to work on a few things over the winter.
3. Value for money, I feel I've got to play to make my membership worthwhile, couldn't pay for a whole year and only play 6 months.

Yes it is

Keeps the swing going
You've paid for 12 months
Modern clothing is easier to play in now
Great craic with mates
Exercise
Makes coming indoors far more enjoyable, steaming mug of Hot Chocolate , toasted tea cakes in front of roaring log fire :)

Its good to get out in the fresh air and have a walk regardless of anything else and it does keep the swing going.

This for me as well.

Only chance for me to play these days is at the weekend so by Monday I am already looking at the forecasts for the following Saturday. We have been extremely lucky so far this winter with the waterproof coat only coming out of the bag on one occasion.

Very lucky down here on the south coast and playing links golf. Course is fully open all year round and as long as it's not chucking it down the conditions can be very pleasant. Greens still run true and almost as quick as summer so just get an extra layer on and enjoy :)

I didn't go out on Saturday. Just no point in gale force winds and heavy showers. I played nine holes yesterday PM and the course was in good condition. However as a rule, I don't play if it's frozen and we're on temp greens as hitting into these located on frozen fairways is a lottery and to be honest I'd rather go to the range and put some constructive practice in as I feel I get more out of it.

I don't enjoy winter golf too much. I'll play in cold (not frozen) and the wind and showers but getting cold and too wet just because isn't my idea of fun and no amount of banter will change that. I wouldn't dream of putting the clubs away and it's the perfect time to get a few lessons and make the changes that'll hopefully get me towards single figures in 2015

If I've got the chance to play a nice course that is in good condition and the weather isn't too bad, I'll venture out.
Freezing cold, blowing a gale, raining, muddy fairways and quagmire semi?
I'll stay indoors thank you.

Even when the conditions are cold I enjoy being out in the fresh air.

It also makes me feel like if I am playing to only 2 or 3 shots over my handicap in these horrible conditions, come the summer it should fall pretty nicely (hopefully).
