Played our usual swindle last Saturday. Course had been closed due to rain most of the week, and the forecast for Saturday was very poor, with rain coming in from eleven.

Drew cards to sort out batting order, and went out to the tee. Started playing at 8.20. Played two holes before one of the four decides to quit. No hat, no umbrella, no jacket. Why start? What forecast did he look at? bear in mind it is not even raining yet.

Played to the 5th, second player quits, no umbrella. It is now starting to drizzle.

Played on as a two, with partner who has no jacket. Quit on 11, as now raining steadily.

Noone out of 16 golfers who started completes 18, most quit after 5 holes. Last 4 in play 15.

What is wrong with carrying all the winter kit needed to do 18 in whatever conditions? most of those playing had electric trolleys, and golf bags the size of a small house.

A lot of them are retired, and play 4 or 5 times a week, so for them it is a case of come back another day, but for others, this is it for the week. Would have been nicer to have drawn among those who are willing to go the whole round, and those who don't want to play, don't start.

Sounds like a moan, but it has got to me.

It's annoying, Murph. Seems there are too many "fair weather "golfers around nowadays. Obviously no boy scouts in your group that day!

I was playing up at Moray at the weekend and joined 3 older retired gents on the 1st tee. Bitter cold day. They whisked round with me, as a visitor, delighted to show me round their course.

Their hands were frozen by the 15th but they struggled on and we had a great craic in the bar afterwards. They could have walked in after 9 but had the good manners not to. It wasn't a medal or anything and they play 3 or 4 times a week.

Whatever happened to the hardy golfer, like these chaps?

Just stepping up as a prime example of hardy golfer as well as trolley dolly. Went out this morning at -2C and scored 88 - my second best score ever, (wearing long vest, two woollen jumpers and a body warmer thing - sorry if this is too much information!)
A bit of warsling required with glove and mitt options at the start, but finished in glorious sun. And not a breath of wind. Also on the course were around a dozen of the weekday regulars.
who needs summer?
(Remind me of this next week when it rains).

I normally play in if its cold:

Hally hanson Baselayer
Polo shirt
Long sleve wind hammer

and if its really cold my waterproof jacket, but after a couple of holes I normally warm through and take the top layer off.

I can't get enough winter golf. I am know I am sad but it comes from the years spent walking the Monros of Scotland in my teens and early terntirs. The feeling you get setting off either on a round of golf or a walk knowing that you are well prepared for the challenging weather that lies ahead helps you enjoy it.

As someone far smarter than me once said:

'There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing'

My point exactly, go prepared.

Unfortunately burned a hole in my Helly base layer yesterday while ironing it. Damn. Might have to go by a new under armour one. As good an excuse as any.

well I never ... a man ironing ... and not only that .. ironing a base layer that nobody sees. I have UA and would say that it only works when you have 2-3 layers on top of it. It is not a thermal.

All you need to keep warm is layers! starting with something like this

http://www.prodirectrugby.com/prodinfo.a...AND=48&SS=1

Under a polo shirt and then your waterproofs that should be in the bag at all times.

People should now what the weather is going to be like! it drives me crazy when my mates complain about it due to them not being prepared.

The first rule in the boys scouts is to be prepared, something that has stayed with me all my life.

Murph-There is no excuse for players being unprepared in winter for the weather conditions which are likely to be faced on the course.
Are these players as unprepared in their daily jobs-do they attend meetings without their laptops or other essential items-why do they not prepare for the golf course.

Maybe you could teach them how to prepare for wet/cold weather golf.

I agree I find it baffling how anyone can go out knowing they will be exposed to the elements for 4+ hours and not be prepared.

In winter I always carry a minimum of 3 gloves, my bag towel and two small spare towels, my wolly hat, my golf mitts and my waterproofs whenever I play be it a friendly or competition

Nowt as queer as folk - Has really made my day the thought of these half drowned golfers walking in - got very funny mental images in my head (perhaps its just me!!!)

What I find baffling is that a golfer will venture out in the elements with just a pair of Primark trousers, a t-shirt and a wee jumper on and for the next four hours are walking round a field in the pouring rain and cold temps and perhaps 25 miles away some folks head off into the hills well aware that there health is at risk if they do not gear up properly.

I am notoriously light on clothing....stay calm girls!
Many a round has been completed in just a polo with a t underneath. I've come in soaked to the skin and taken Monday off work with a "life-threatening chill" , but it's worth it to save the feeling of being restricted.

I always carry a waterproof top, but it rarely comes out, never walked off the course, ever.
