winter course easier / harder ?

We seem to be permanently on temps at the minute. I find myself really struggling to putt even though the holes are bucket sized. Chipping has become a bit of a lottery. It totally negates any spin. approach shots either run on or plug short of the painted circle green.

The course is playing a good bit shorter than normal. yesterday we had a jack frost comp of 3/4 handicap. 16 temps.

I could not believe the scoring when I checked the leader board. The top 20 all had 40+ points. I have never seen scoring like it.

Fair play to the podgester. He managed to pull in 45 points with a blank at the first for 3rd place. A good round in tough weather. The handicap sec is sharpening his knife

If ever there was proof that placing helps scoring it is this. Not to mention those two 59's in the one round on the professional tour not to long ago.


I am looking forward to getting back to proper golf. It seems like an age since i've seen a ball bounce normally.

Has anyone else had similar crazy scores. I would have had to shoot -3 gross to win yesterday

With temps and buckets I've seen a 50 point score before now. High forties is not unusual, but not from me!

Saturday swindle, on real greens was won with 46 points.

Winter golf is easier, as the course is shorter, the greens are receptive, etc. As long as the greens aren't too bad, although some weirdos like slow greens?

I played with a Roll up group last winter on a Sunday afternoon all low guys, 3/4 handicap on normal greens half on temps. The last round i played with them last year i was with two guys off scratch both shot almost 50 points off scratch. I shot 45 off HH.. pitch and putt with big holes

ive played temp links before. A world away from the sludge on a boggy parkland my good chum :thup:

Its not weird... and I sad I LOVED them! If your crap at putting you take what you can get...

Our place does not get any shorter and the wind always defends it but it does get even wider with no leaves on the trees and the greens are clearly easier to stop the ball on. On a calm day it is easier in the winter.

We play at full length all year (although the back nine is currently closed as a couple of holes are a bit damp) but generally I don't notice there being too much difference in scores between summer and winter. It plays longer as there is less run on the fairways but that is countered by less punishing rough and softer greens.

We have winter tee's and they largely shorten the course so yes, I do think Winter golf is easier. That said, we have 2 par 3's that go from 170ish yards to 190/200 and they are high si's too.

Good on Podge blitzing it like that. He hit it well when I last played with him at Formby.

Our two courses are marginally easier because there's less rough than in the summer (when it can be knee deep) - you still don't want to be in the thicker stuff though. We're also generally further forward on the tees (maybe 200 yards shorter than normal overall) - though still on proper tees - majority of par fours are still over 400 yards.

You have to use a matt on the fairway which means the same lie on every shot.

Fairways are running much the same speed as the rest of the year and greens are OK too, not as quick as in summer but not quite as smooth either.

It's a bit easier than in the summer though not by any massive amount.

I didn't play in the stableford yesterday but it was won with 39 points - which is about average over the year for the medal course unless it's blowing a hoolie in which case it can be much lower

First medal of the year on Saturday and my club were certainly looking to avoid low scores. Strong wind into your face on the long holes, no run on the fairways at all but white tees all at the back of the tee boxes and white flags on a large number of holes as well. Lowest score was 1 under I think and the lowest gross was 5 or 6 over.

I don't fully subscribe to this.

I think one situation offsets against the other, we are forward on some tee's, take our 1st, and yet I am still landing in roughly the same area as if I was 30+ yards back, plus, I'm getting little run on the ball, its a cold ball flight, so, although in actual yardage were shorter, I'm playing from similar distances for my 2nd shots to the green!

Were not on temps so no bucket holes but the greens are soft so you can go pin hunting with a slight degree of confidence but otherwise, I think some of the elements we face during winter offset against those in the summer.
