WHY!!!

I was thinking about putting some cards in before i leave in order to get my handicap below 19 and ensure i can join the same golf club as my dad! but... i just recieved this email!
"Sorry, but you must play in Qualifying competitions and score below the standard scratch for the day, before your handicap can be reduced.


Supplementary scores are not acceptable."

Why is this!!! i personally think it is pointless! And there is a chance i will get to play maximum 2 more qualifiers before i leave i now i have the added pressure to have to shoot under handicap!

According to the Handicap Matters section in the mag, suplementarry scores are suitable for this purpose but must be declared before teeing off etc.

I think it was a couple of issues back - dig it out and show it to the club - it may help.

I think that you will find that supplementary cards are encouraged to make a lapsed handicap into an active one and for people who struggle to play in competitions as they may have young families or have to work when comps are played

Supplementary cards will not normally be accepted for the sole purpose of handicap reduction as there are plenty of opportunities to do that in club comps where everyone in the club has an equal chance of playing.In fact, the CONGU rules dont allow for a supplementary card for anyone who has played more than 6 carded comps between annual reviews

"Supplementary ScoresSupplementary Scores is a facility in the 2008-2011 CONGU Unified Handicapping System to help club members to submit qualifying scores for handicapping purposes.


All affiliated Golf Clubs must offer this facility to its membership. Certain restrictions apply which can be found in the attached file or in the CONGU manual.


IMPORTANT CHANGES - Effective 1st January 2011

- Permissible for all handicap categories, including Category 1, to return Supplementary Scores.

- All members now entitled to return Supplementary Scores irrespective of the number of qualifying scores returned the previous year."

I think the thing here is that you are ENTITLED to enter supplementary scores - it is not something that is for negotiation so I would say your club is not applying the CONGU Regulations correctly, assuming of course that your club is affiliated to one of the home golf unions. If they are not then your local regulations are what will apply.

I believe you can do one a week, the week runs Monday to Sunday so you can't do two in a weekend. That's the latest from our handicap secretary.

My club has come out and said they wont accept supplementary cards unless it's to activate a handicap.

When I'm feeling a little confrontational I'll take them to task over it and see what happens.

I have long since noticed at my club that if someone who has been a member longer than me thinks something is the case, then they are right, regardless of what it says in black and white in the CONGU rules or the Rules of Golf.

It's either, "you're reading it wrong/misunderstanding it" or "that doesn't apply unless it's in suchandsuch a circumstance"

Apparently just because I haven't played golf for 20 years, I can't possibly be correct in any dispute about rules etc.

You may make yourself unpopular with your committee, but, if they refuse to accept Supplementary Scores and won't budge, someone needs to inform your Area Authority (Berks Bucks and Oxon Golf Union?) that they are not complying with CONGU directives.
