• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Why is it ok for women to do this.

and the 4 shots will be on the ladies index 1-4 , on our course we have a par 4 for men thats a par 5 for women , so 4 would become 5 :)

Just checked the cards, the index's are pars are the same but on 2 of them I'm giving 55yds, one is 89yds and the par 5 is 122yds!

Does depend on each Club, but 'normal' way in matches is off the Men's card. As 1st is Par 4/SI 7 for Men and Par 5/SI 11 for Ladies, that should mean that you are 1 up after the first!

And you are taking the wrong attitude imo, Your handicap is taken off the Whites (normally); hers is off the Reds. It would simply be several shots higher if taken off the Mens tees!

There should also be an Equity adjustment involved to take the difference between the 2 SSSs too, so you should be giving 1 extra shot if you are playing off the Whites or 2 if off the Yellows.

Thankfully we don't have these issues at my club.

I could turn up in ankle socks, a pair of shorts and have my shirt untucked if I want. I think most people would find my swing more offensive.

Thankfully our management are putting more effort into making the course look and play it's absolute best.

We all pay the same price, the birds are allowed to enter any of the competitions - it's good. The only thing that gripes me 'equality-wise' is the tee boxes. In our Open in May, the gents were pushed back one or two tee boxes on the majority of holes. Whereas the women's stayed on Reds, on the first tee box. I know that isn't their fault, but it's not exactly making the course more difficult for everybody.

OK, I can see that.

Don't understand that.

Anyway, I'll just enjoy it, my first experience of giving shots and 1400 yards (average 77yds per hole) away

Since most men (certainly the ones who hit forum distances) outdrive me by at least 80 yards, you should be ok.
Especially since you all seem able to hit your 7 irons 200 yards...

Didn't realise you were 'playing away' as well! :D

Do all SIs match? If so, it makes working out strokes somewhat easier/fairer.

For info:

Where both Males and Females participate in a single competition or match, there needs to be a way in which the different degrees of difficulty from the different tees played can be equated. Imagine what would happen if the Measured Course Red tees were actually situated in the same place as, say, the Men's Yellows. Actually, the SSS would be expected to be higher and handicaps the same (well nominally). Not really any different to comparing 2 completely different courses, at different clubs - which is what the Congu Handicap system does.

This Equity adjustment should be applied when the Mens and Ladies SSSs are different. On your course, for example, Ladies SSS is 72, whlie for Men, 71 off the Whites and 70 off the Yellows. So 1 shot allowance if off whites and 2 if off Yellows. That's all that's required in a match, but Stableford mixed comps can have different adjustment. Actually in your club's case, because Par matches SSS for both Ladies and Men off White, there is no adjustmnt (so a Lady getting 36 points is deemed to have played as well as a Man getting 36 points. However, a Man off the Yellows, where Par is 1 more than SSS needs to score 37 points to match either.

Appendix O - Page 79ff of the Congu Manual http://www.englandgolf.org/e-brochure/index.html explains.

I believe Equity shots used to be, and occasionally still are, called 'Courtesy' shots.- a very bad description!

Brilliant.......that should stop the wingeing.
Man up Fish.

PS Courtesy shots preceded SSS & CSS.
They were called courtesy shots because the mens course was generally a lower par than the ladies.
