LP - Tours and festivals bring some of the best memories for me. Great get togethers.

Well done on getting to National League level for umpiring. Obvious to say that is a high standard to achieve but it is. I always found players to be very accepting of decisions in hockey. You may not agree with a decision but you knew the consequences of arguing. Did you still find the same at that level?

Yep - you get the odd people grumble about a decision but mainly they accept it , both umpires are mic'd up now which was a good step forward. When a player doesn't agree with a decision he/she will always asked for clarification respectfully and if they didn't they knew they would be sitting down for two mins

At the higher level the introduction of video replays with one team challenge has helped because there is obviously times when neither umpire can see something but it can only be used in the D

When I played back in Cheshire the umpires always stayed after the game, sat with each team and would happily chat about any decisions. We would go through any contentious decisions, we as players learnt from it, the umpires did to. Whenever something happened on the pitch the umpire would simply go, "chat in the bar later" with a thumbs up. You accepted it and got on with the game. After all whilst you are stood chatting the game is going on, pretty stupid thing to do. There was never any animosity as we got to know them and you understood they gave decsions honestly. Things were different in the NE as the umpires rarely mixed. There was no chat back still but I could sense that there was more of a them and us attitude from both sides and that was not healthy. It was a shame as I learnt a great deal by chatting to umpires after a match and it was good for all concerned.

Indeed my compliments and gratitude to you for umpiring LP! As skipper I chatted a bit with umpires and I have admiration and thanks for them all.

I think having to do your bit as a player, umpiring and coaching little leagues etc. forces you to respect the ethics.
and of course "You may not agree with a decision but you knew the consequences of arguing."
As a keeper I did my best to pay back the compliments to aggressive forwards but on the right side of the law (obviously)... always tricky! Just the one green card on my record!

Struggling to remember RAF players, I did play one game against them a few years ago now. It was a warm up at Guildford before they went abroad for a tour/tournament.
Ian Jennings and Guy Fordham are names that come to mind, but they were both infantry/army side.

Video replay... is terrific, especially considering the lack of sponsors and money in hockey.
One of the main reasons I cannot watch football, richest game in the world still can't sort out simple video replay - joke!

Ian Jennings (APTC) was the PTI at Newbury with us for 2 years, not only a very good Hockey player but also one of the best PTI's I've come across, his particular favourite punishment was 2 minutes of burpees on a crash mat for those failing to show enough effort!

Jenno does a lot of coaching and indeed coached the RAF at one stage - 80/90's the main players would be Powell , Welham and Oatly all played National League regularly plus a few others on the edge. Now most of the RAF squad are around a National League side and indeed one guy who i have known since he was 7 ( used to play with his father ) has just been called up to GB

LT - I always socialised with the players after , and for me the reason why umpires have a better manner and respect is because they were all players themselves with some still playing. There is a couple of National League Panel umpires who also still play National League themselves still

LP - did you come across Geoff Riley in your umpiring days? Geoff was a teacher at RGS Newcastle but made it to National League level and possibly even umpired the odd international game. He played a year or two at Tynemouth with me when he fancied a break from umpiring. Being a National League umpire when you live in the NE is not ideal, way too many miles on motorways. Maybe a different era.

I think it is a real shame that football has never managed to persuade lower league players, ie those who have not earned big money and still need to work, to go into refereeing after they finish. They would surely have a better manner with players whilst understanding the game well at the same time, ie what is a dive, what is a nasty tackle etc. I agree with your comments and rarely came across an umpire who loved himself in the same way some football ones do.

There is a Geoff Riley who is on the South HUA Panel and does National League and South League Prem ? - must be Mid 50's ? Quite tall

I haven't been on the panel for three years now

Age would be about right. Can't remember height. Would be quite a coincidence to have two high level hockey umpires with the same name. I always got on with Geoff. He rubbed a few people up, quite deliberately at times but I think that was because he got bored easily. Good umpire though, always in control (I saw a few matches that he did)
