Why dont we practice putting for hours?

Because it's dead boring, in common with all practice. I didn't always think that. I use to go to the range and hit 100, sometimes 150 balls. Now I get fed up before I've hit 50, I'm sure it's an age thing.

Small point re. putting mats. I've got one & where I put it I have a right lip, 6' putt. I can hole 20 out of 20. On the course I could never do that, even from the same place. Why is that, do you think?

I never, ever practised putting until a few years ago. I thought my technique was fine, until a pro said what would you like to do with your last lesson (of six). Shall we have a look at your stroke, he said, and I replied, OK but I think I'm happy. 30 mins later and I had my eyes well and truly opened by a new technique and far better roll & consistency.

He said, once technique is OK, just practice and don't repeat the same putt again; obviously because you very rarely hit the same putt twice, and because it really shows how you are putting and reading greens.

I spent the summer practising putting and my scores came tumbling down - I was average putter in our social group before and now I'm (cue trumpet) the best putter. :D

No, it was @ Royal Musselburgh, a course I find harder to par for some reason and I got wet............are you a member at Dunbar GC, did you play the medal yesterday?

i was a guest - played it a few times now, great golf course, i just never seem to make many birdies. lovely afternoon, a comfortable 22 deg when we started. cooled down around the turn and there was a brief shower on the 11th/12th, the sun returned for the last 3-4 holes - glorious.

Having missed a "foot" putt for birdie which would have given us 42 points in Hawkstone Park's Seniors Open today (Would have been leading with 3 groups to come in ) will be practicing a bit more...........

If you get a chance do play the Hawkstone course there, it's a stunner. Happy with the 74 blows round it, well 73 of them :D

Putting practice can be boring and your back gets tired after a while...
Green speeds and slopes vary from practice green to course green so your practice may not mirror what you find on the course.

The only putting practice I do is before I tee off - and then sometimes not at all.
I putt from about 20-25 feet - the distance I find myself from the pin more often than not - and as long as I can lag everything close I'm happy.
Then I may hit a few 5-10 footers - that's where the shot saving putts come from.
Averaging less than 30 putts and about 1.6 per GIR so not unhappy at all.

I recently spent a lot more time on the practice green and my putting vastly improved. The stoke is more reliable and as such more drop or get close. Have I kept it up? No!! I really should!

I will do around 10 mins at a time on the putting green. After that I lose interest. I find its the same for the practise ground as well, it hit all the balls one way pick them up then it's back to the car, a mate of mine can do 8hrs solid practise on his day off, not for me!

I practise in the scoring zone, 20ft and in. I can spend 2 hrs or more on the green with various drills and aids to help. I'm an Aimpointer so I'll also practise that whilst putting which keeps the boredom at bay and it's fun when your making longer putts doing this. Got SwingSmart today so I'll be trying that on the greens in next few days.

It's like any practice ok if a coach is watching to put right and point out mistakes.Or you just reinforce bad habits.how many practice greens are the same speed as the greens your about to play on.if not you just under or over hit your first few putts.
