What is it that you love about golf?

For me, I love the challenge. It is an extremely tough sport to play. Even the pros get it horribly wrong :-).

I also, love getting out into the open fresh air and the beautiful scenery. The social element doesn’t really come into it.

All of the above.

The challenge, the thrill of going on a par/birdie run (doesn't happen very often :(), being outside (when it's not raining!) and the social side of it.

Oh and the full english before a round from the clubhouse :D

It has to be one of the most stupid games ever invented. Grown men (and women, and not grown men and women) hitting a little white ball with a stick around a field.

What relevance does that have to human evolution? Consider football - chasing and kicking a ball around a field. One could argue that this developed from the need to chase poultry in the wild attempting to kick it to death for supper. Rugby - the need to work as a team so as to tackle buffalo to the ground. Even cricket may have gad some use in the past - throwing stones at animals, or blocking stones being thrown at head height.

But what use could golf have been? "I have stick in hand, no hands free. How to get little white stone home to HID? No pockets, can't be bothered to bend over to pick it up. I know - use stick to hit stone all way home."

Having said that, I like the challenge of getting the stone home.

I love all sports, play rugby and have done for years.
for me what sets golf apart from other sports is that feeling when you hit a perfect wedge into the green or monster drive, knowing that you and only you are responsible for it. I dont think you dont get that same feeling with team sports!

On the other hand if your having howler you cant blame anyone but yourself

It serves as a fantastic release from weekly stresses at work etc. If I've had a rough day, stopping off at the range to clamour some balls is always a winner and at the end of the week, knowing that I can spend three hours enjoying a sport with friends before socialising afterwards is great.

Walking down the middle of a perfectly cut fairway with the electric trolley just 3 yards behind, after a perfect drive. Going through the pre shot routine, exact yardage etc, selecting the right club and knocking it in close enough to give a chance of a birdie. A good stroke on the putt resulting in an 'end over end' roll that reaches the centre of the cup for my birdie.

I am salivating (not a pretty sight!)!!!!

The feel of it...

There are so many "feels" in golf

The feel of the outdoors
The feel of the club/ball connection
The feel of the roll of a putt
The feel of the check of a chip

You get a lot of feedback and it does something to me!

I also love the socail slow paced life of the game, the relaxing warm bar and the release of lifes pressurs just by going to the putting green and knocking a little while ball about.

I also adore the competitative side, few other sports have a handicapping system that allows the very best to take on the very worst where both have to play very well to win!

I love it when something goes and you can fix it yourself,
and as you come in on a crisp warm evening with the glow of the sun on your back you hand in your scorecard, thinking that you are in with a chance and you are beaten by a point argghhh!! :p
But you can still get the satisfaction of knowing that next week you can improve

EH ???? :D :D :D
BIT early to be drinking Tim

All of the above!! It's the only thing that is mine since leaving work. Those few hours trying to beat your beat etc, or practicing the new drill from your lesson. The thrill of that perfect shot be it drive, iron, pitch, chip or putt. They are few and far between 17 holes of shite can be forgotten in one shot!!

I play because I will never be so good I can't improve. I play to beat my PB. I play to lower my h'cap. I play for those rare shots I hit that I know no player in the world could have hit better.

cos I like spending money on inanimate objects, wasting time on silly pursuits and getting 5 minutes of feel good by hitting a sweet drive, iron, chip or putt

Oh and my friends saying nice shot when I muller one :)

All of the above, but for me the best is that I can play the same courses as the top pro's. I have played Carnoustie, Turnburry , Gleneagles and St. Andrews all from the same tees as used in major tournaments. You just couldn't play the same venues as other major sports such as tennis, football etc.

I play golf purely to see the look on my wifes face when I
beat her boss time and time again,he's the kind of guy you
never get bored of whipping,he cheats,he cant play golf for
toffee, yet he still boasts about where he's been, and what he's done,a true "t**t if ever there was one, billynomates
sez it all...btw he's playing at gleneagles next week..

Whoa....you really hit some of those now and again.

Last total quality shot I hit was about 53 holes ago.
