Just got back from the driving range...Been practicing Tony's drill. BTW Tony you owe me £1.20 :p just kidding.

While I was there, 4 or 5 people came in, got their balls, and with no warm up, no stretching, no nothing...pulled the biggest stick out of their bag and smack, then they wonder why their not hitting it well. No drills, no swing checks, their just popping balls onto the tee then smack. Their hitting 50 balls before I've hit ten. Does this type of practice do any good?

It warms you up on a cold day until you put your back out.

Can't do any good really. You've got to use your pre-shot routine otherwise you've got no chance of taking it to the course.

More fool them.

It's just a case of "Willy Waving", they will all have been trying to knock the ball over / into the fence or net at the far end of the range. I see it most times I go to my locl range. waste of time and effort if you ask me.

Snap, I have no taken my practice into full preshot routine work. It works so much better.

Why do I owe you £1.20?

I think its each to their own.

If that is how they get enjoyment from the game, fair enough. Some people have a bag of naff clubs and to them to the driving range is as far as they can, or want to take their game. If they were hacking around the course (like in the early thread) scoring 190+, then i'd get upset!

It doesn't bother me as I like to think of their money going back into developement of my golf club.

What does bother me is the swearwords they like to scream and shout as they boom dog it out there with no consistency or care for where it goes, usually during my backswing.

It is the constant shouting and screaming at their mate in the next bay egging thm on to hit hit harder or further that really irritates me. Fortunately I have found a range now that is an oasis of tranquility and only ever frequented by golfers there to practice. It never attracts kids probably due to its remotre location, the vigliance of range marshalls and the relatively high cost of balls.

It still gets the machine gunners rattling ball after ball but as mentioned elsewhere if that is what they think constitutes good practice or gives them satisfaction so be it. Personally, a bucket of 75 balls can last me anywhere between 45 and 60 minutes depending on what shots I'm hitting, what I'm working on and how I'm hitting.

I was trying out your Drill with the coins (couldn't trust myself to use balls) and I think I must have set them a bit to close together. :D

I did say use the 10p's untill you are confident :D

Unless you did and kept replaceing them :D

I must admit I take pride in the strange looks I get from rattlers when I'm taking a practice swing on a driving range!

Unfortunatly the closest ranges to me are muni ones, and whilst the range itself isn't too bad, it does attract allsorts!

What I find more unnerving then hackers is when a really talented 12 year old is next to me completely outplaying me!!! It does make me happy though to picture my son after a few more years doing the same thing though! He's going to be so much better then me when he's older!

He is two at the moment and has clubs! Nice swing too, just no attention span!!!

I must say, I got some strange looks as well, with coins all over the mat and me with my izzo power band on, they must have thought I was mad.

I'm a bit quite at work today, so I might go again this afternoon.....I'll see what I can do to make them give me more strange looks.

I gave this a try at the range last night too, apart from losing all the money in my back pocket bar the pound coins (I gave up with it once the coppers had gone) - I found it really helped me. I was striking the ball cleaner than before, keeping them straight and some respectable distance without swinging too hard too.

I think I look a little odd taking the club away and will do until it's trained into my muscles, but felt it worked well.

Was quite a few guys there, rocking up, pulling out the drivers, hitting a couple and then falling apart very quickly. I've always felt concious of the fact they were driving the ball miles down the range while I'm just trying to land within a few feet of the 70 yard marker, but now I'm there a fair amount, I've noticed that they have no consistency...

Welcome to the forum marmar, Always best starting with your coins wide enough apart so its almost impossible to hit them.

In the pics, I dont think I would ever hit them, even with my eyes closed. Always start wide and drag them in.

I do tend to hit my range balls pretty quick but with no rush,i dont practise swing i just put the club where it suppose to be,feel it then hit it,i get a few looks as i hit all my irons in between 2 shaft like sticks they must think i mad with the tramlines set up,

As i quite young i get people looking in my bag telling me what i should be using/whats the best etc like they know it all if i here ;you should use mizuno irons@again ill crack up

Ha ha now they are good irons i happy to talk gear at the range but when someone tells me that my clubs are not good and i should use something else they get a blunt answer, once got told Cobra are old mans clubs come on its bright yellow,i get it alot where i practise it drives me to be a ignorant bugger to everyone there

I know what you mean, I had a guy try and tell me I should be using a stiff shaft because I am young and that he used regular only because he was middle aged. :D

I always walk off the mat after every practice shot and give myself a ten second break between each ball. I then go through my pre-shot routine and fire. As I said earlier 75 balls can take over an hour to hit. I want to make sure when I practice is quality not quantity and that I am ingraining good swing thoughts and not getting into bad habits.

I have a whole range of practice aids which is why I'm grateful for the relative solitude at Maidenhead Golf Centre. I have a Izzo power band, a small beach ball and a proliner alignment aid that I regularly use. I guess I need to add in a small bag of change now as well.
