Why do high handicappers...

...insist on giving so much advice? Even if I were a scratch player I think I'd be reluctant to dish it out, just in case what I was saying was potentially unsettling. Yet 5+, 10+, 20+ and even people without handicaps are dishing it out willy nilly.

Offer opinions, yes, but please don't tell a person he's wrong (not unless your name is Luke Donald, you coach Luke Donald, or you know that person's game intimately).

To quote Gazza, they talk a good game. ;)

think your confusing me Timothy, would you not then b the preverbial" high handicapper giving advice ".. mayb i misread something , if so i apologise

To be fair, I've spent ages learning to hit the ball long so consider myself highly skilled in this department.

I have thought the same as Tim on a number of occasions since viewing and then making some comments on the Forum, but he undoubtedly must include himself in this category
The only advice I would ever and have ever given to anyone off my middlish Handicap, is to Practice your short game to make up for all the errors that you have made to get somewhere close to the green.

ACCEPTED & apreciated mate but so might some of the other higher handicappers (in different aspects) but it would still make them a high handicapper giving advice tho. wouldnt it?? most of the people giving the advice are passing on their own experiences & how they got through it or fixed it ..thread easy huge boy :D :D

It's a good question. On a forum I don't see a problem with it if you think you can help, you can ignore someone on a forum, or tell them they're talking sh!te.

On the course, people offering advice on my swing really wind me up. The only advice I want is from my pro if I ask him for it. I don't mind people I play with regularly telling me if I'm swinging too quick, I'll know anyway because the resulting shot is usually a massive slice, but I don't mind them telling me anyway. Beyond that, they can keep it to themselves.

Personally, I never give my opinion on the course. I might offer a bit on here but that's more my opinion than advice and I'd never offer anything on swing mechanics, I've got enough trouble with my own :D

These are opinion forums, and everyone's opinion is worth having. I also baulk a bit when I see some high handicapper suggesting changes to poster's swings etc based on something they read in a magazine. But its up to the original poster who has asked for advice to sort the wheat from the chaff, and after you've been in golf forums a while you tend to be able to tell who knows what they are talking about based on knowledge and experience, and who is making a best guess. Its a bit like our timgolfy pontificating about his awesomeness when he openly knows nothing about the long drive subject, and has achieved nothing except hit a ball over a fence. Deluded people have to be respected and tolerated, even if they are idiots.

Have you ever been on the range looking at others and thought "if only he/she did this it would help that swing"? Obviously it would be rude to interrupt someone to tell them they're doing it wrong. On the other hand some people just seem to be silently crying out for help but too afraid to ask.

If anyone said to me: "Tim, how do you hit the ball so long?" I'd gladly offer my view.

Do PGA pros receive training in ignoring swings until specifically asked to examine?

At a driving range you'll get no interaction between bays. Driving ranges are very impersonal places.

At a golf club it's different. On the putting green or on the practice ground you'll strike up conversations with other members and you'll talk about your game and you'll receive and give advice. The club pro will also impart advice because your part of the club.

If you're at a driving range, why would a pro help you unless you're paying him for his time??

One other thing - NEVER offer advice to another player in the middle of a round even if they're having a stinker - unless they ask. I think it's one of the worst things in golf to do that unasked.

Just my opinion though.

Of course I knew that, I was just testing the forum..

10th March 2011

Just received my Swing Speed Radar and Tempo Timer. Straight into the back garden for some practice swings.

Although new to golf I do have a decent drive, measuring on Google Earth about 230-270 depending on wind (so, say, 250 average). So I was expecting about a 110+ swing speed.

First swing 91.
2nd swing 94.
3rd swing 92.

Holy cow. After a few minutes of swingingly wildly it went to 99 - this was using all of my effort (6ft 2in and long arms). Had a rest and a think about it and reckoned that the wrists must be preventing a full release. Back into the garden and got to 109 using a wild uncontrollable swings.

How TF do pros get 120 average? I feel like a right wimp.

Exactly how long is this ages that qualifies you to tell others how to hit it long?

Quality, not quantity. Or in this case: distance, not shortness.

I'm gonna have to start ignoring you again Timmy. I thought that maybe you were starting to be sensible but it seems that every time you make a post you mug yourself off.

Oh, and before you say it, I've already got my muzzle so no need to post that one. Now where's that ignore button...

OK Tim I play off 12 and struggle to hit my driver 210/220 yards. Obviously I make up for my lack of didtance in other ways. May I ask what advice you could offer me please? Many thanks
