Why do high handicappers...

I personally think any advice could be good advice. Whats to say that a particular high handicapper hasn't had a lesson and is simply passing on the coaches advice to some, Albeit FREE OF CHARGE

A little story for you Tim

I was at the range one day and was hitting next to a lady pro golfer who had won a ladies European tour event, I was on "hello" terms with her but no more.

I was then about an 18 h/cap and I asked her how she was playing and she said that she wasnt striking the ball as well as she had been. I had seen several of her hits in between breaks and said that I noticed that the first move away from the ball, at set up, was a turn of the wrist. She said that she thought that she had stopped doing that, she then corrected her takeaway, hit the ball superbly and after thanking me, left in a very happy frame of mind.

A second example, Leftie and I played together a the North Kent forum meet recently. One of the other lads was a really nice young lad off a higher h/cap who's driving was a bit erratic on the day and asked what he was doing wrong. In fact, he had a quite reasonable swing but Leftie and I in discussuion earlier had said that his stance looked much too wide and, when he asked, we offered this advice to him and he played the second 18 holes so much better with a narrower stance.

On both occassions the advice was given in the nicest of ways and received the same. My complaint is only when people, either higher or lower h/cap than me, tell me what to do after seing maybe one bad shot when their advice is not sought

Good post Chris. I was playing one evening and noticed the assistant pro driving off a tee 20 yards away. The drive went arrow straight but 20 yards right. As i was directly behind him, i could see he was aiming right, and mentioned it to him. He put a club down, aligned himself with it and hit another drive straight down the middle. I knew he wouldn't mind being told, and he was more than happy with the advice.

Must admit it is sometimes difficult to hold your tongue when you can see an obvious problem. I did tell one of my mates how to play a burried ball in a bunker, as it was driving me mad seeing him playing them with a wide open face, and leaving it in the bunker.

Wenger made a comment about this he said that advice used to come vertically ie from those higher up in life or from people better than you, now with the advent of blogs and forums advice comes horizontally at you from everywhere people are much more used to givingg and receiveing advice, and its not all wrong just like its not all right you, but everyone thinks there opinion is valid

Using Timgolfy's analogy, ie "I Hit the ball a long way, therefore I AM a good golfer", I am sure that if you put me in a Ferrari 430 and let me loose on an empty M1 I could probably hit 190mph, - does that mean I am therefore an extremely talented Driver and should really be in F1 after all ???

Same thing surely ?

Depends if you are reluctant to put your foot down in the Ferrari and would prefer 150mph and on the road than 190mph and in the central reservation :)

Perhaps stick with an Audi (3-wood?) :D

I'd say 99% of golfers (perhaps more) are simply shite as they have literally no understanding of the golf swing.

nb: I'm shite for other reasons :D LOL

As long as it's "Do your flies up" or "Your shoelaces are undone" then I don't mind. Having said that (I am now thinking while typing which can be dangerous) most golf pros seem to have coaches, not all of who I would guess would play any way near as well as their clients, and yet the pro will happily listen to their coach and act on it. A high handicapper may notice something blindingly obvious but it's often the way the advice comes across so thinking back to my old coaching days just use open questions eg "Why do you hold your clubface so open at address?" but it's probably best not to ask "Why are your flies undone?".

Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

Also, as a relatively high handicapper who has spent quite a while trying to improve I'd tell others what tips and drills worked for me if their problem sounded like something I'd overcome!

spot on Matty, its high handicappers that generally are seeking to improve and therfore taking lessons, correcting more flaws etc so generally either in or have been in a similar position and failry recently

I will only state what my pro has shown me thats worked or based on playing a round something that clicked.

A lot of advice is based on the basics which in its rawest form golf is! Hit a ball from a to b in the least shots possible... doesnt get any more simple than that

(actually doing it is a damned site harder tho lol :D )

Or they try and get too much understanding.

For many people golf works at it's best when they can keep their mind out of the way, and just let the body get on with what it wants to do.

How many times have I set up to the ball so badly that my body hasn't got a hope of getting a good strike on it?

Half decent alignment. Half decent stance.

Then just swing back, and through, and hope the bloody ball is somewhere in the middle.

:p

I'd say it was more that they have a misunderstanding of their own swing. They may have a good idea about what they should be doing, and probably even think they are doing it when in actual fact, they are probably doing something completely different.

This misunderstanding causes them to think the issue lies with something else in their swing and they end up compounding errors on top of errors.

He talks alot of sense sometimes

Says the man who believes shoving sticks out of every available orifice can help hit the ball 300 yards.

Law of averages Bob, spout enough sh!te and eventually something sensible has to come out :D

Did I tell you my thoughts on putting...

tim you should read your post's back, you certainly like climb your own tree. most of my drives are 300yrds...so what, i'm still crap!

i personly hate it when the person in the lane next to you tell's you how to swing a club. most of the time they are doing it to make themself look good. if i geniunly think that they are being sincere then i just humor them and be as nice as possible. i've been offered advice every time i go the range but in the end i will only listen to the person i pay money to, the PRO. on my first ever lesson he 'said dont listen random advice as it could end up having a negative effect on my work'.

...insist on giving so much advice? Even if I were a scratch player I think I'd be reluctant to dish it out, just in case what I was saying was potentially unsettling. Yet 5+, 10+, 20+ and even people without handicaps are dishing it out willy nilly.

Offer opinions, yes, but please don't tell a person he's wrong (not unless your name is Luke Donald, you coach Luke Donald, or you know that person's game intimately).

Possibly because we have been there done that and this is how we cured it.
:D
