Why do courses have a handicap limit?

Just a query really, I know the Hotchkin was 24 but off 28 apart from a few silly shots I didnt find it overly brutal or intimidating (yes I know we were off the green tee's but that was more weather related)

Is it purely to keep the speed of play up or other reasons?

Apart from Muppet 1 and Muppet 2 in "playabilty test" thread, speed of play is not always related to hcp.

I've often got stuck behind a group of low hcp players.
Frequently including my husband!

yeah, 4 I think, 1 I was fubarred in and I doubt a single figure golfer could have done much more lol. if it was strokeplay I would have taken an unplayable and dropped a club length back, a 90 degree wedge wouldnt have got that bugger out

so the limit is more based on the difficulty due to the mahoosive bunkers then

I didnt get 2 on any as it was 3/4 handicap Saturday, played off 17 both rounds

I was in the one to the right of the second par 3, 7th hole ? on the downslope with a lip of at least ten foot in front of me. Nice full 60 degree wedge cleared the lip no problems at all. It also cleared a tree 20 feet the other side of the green. Why do fairway bunker shots never come out so cleanly ?
