Why are we obsessed with length.

Im struggling to work out where the obsession with length comes from. When ever there is a discussion on this matter, its get touchy, like someone is questioning your sexuality or something.

Now i have to admit since being on this forum ive become less obsessed with it, and more focused in the final score, but a part of me is always looking an new drivers in the effort to find that magic stick that will have me competitive with stevie big balls in the distance war.

Do i see my current swing producing 300 yards drives.... in a word no. but if i had the option of £500 in lessons to produce that 300 yard average, or £500 for a new fandangle driver that was a sure thing with no compromise on consistency would i buy one,,,,, too friggin right.

Never mind length, what about girth?

:);)

Barry, after seeing your swing I can tell you that even if you spend £5m having an EXTRA ARM sewn onto your chest you won't be hitting it 300yds!!!

I've never been obsessed with length and quite happily admit I probably only aberage around 225-230. I'd like to be longer but as I struggle to be that distance and accurate, its all about tryingto find the short stuff first and foremost for me these days and I'll deal with the next shot from there. Every now and then I'll have a good day like FoA or Blackmoor where I managed to get a few god ones out there and past Smiffy.

I don't give a damn about length

Seriously though! When I started playing golf in my naievety I simply stood up and smacked it. Being from a hockey/sporting background it went pretty well if not always straight and I immediately outhit all the women and alot of the men at the club. They all wowed about it but I hated my game and was a proper one trick pony. When I learnt the rest of the game I absolutely delighted in planning and executing the perfect chip shot or perfect approach iron and that remains with me.

Having said that there is a certain type of male golfer I enjoy outhitting but then they ask for it !

being a big hitter is almost neccesary at my course,l but i do find it repetative and a toutch boring just being able to hit a controlled 250 ish yard drive without lashing it, with just a wedge on at some of the other local courses

I'm with Homer on this,my drives go 230-240,but at least I know there gonna be on the fairway,so I've nearly always got a decent shot to the green, hand on heart Im not gonna be much better tha a 12 handicap, but I can put agood round together,to my way of thinking,if I'm striking the ball well I'm happy.

Played a guy today who had a real touch around the greens,I'd sooner have his game, than distance anytime.

We are only really obsessed by length because the Manufacturers tell us we are.
We're always buying new kit that will hit it longer than ever before - which of course we won't...

Length is linked to accuracy.
Having oodles of both is very, very rare..
Plenty have one or the other and as we all know, a 300 yard drive taht finds the thick rough is way, way worse than a 200 yarder that finds the short stuff.

I've never been obsessed with how far I hit it. I can hit the ball a decent distance but what's more relevent is how many more it takes to get the ball in the hole. If I don't hit it as far as someone else then all it means is I'm hitting a longer club into the green than they are - so?

My theory is that its easier to teach someone to hit it straight than hit it long. You can either hit it long or you cant and you cant turn a 200 yard average into 300.

I don't care how long people hit it. I know some big hitters, on here and at my club. I have issues with people quoting distances, with swing speeds, that don't equate. I have a 95/100 mph swing. I carry about 220. With a smash factor of 1.5 and pretty optimised launch and spin. Someone quoting 110 swing speed is not going to carry 280 plus. Physics won't allow it. This stuff annoys me.

Swinger hits it long. He gives it a fair bash. I have not played with many anywhere who bash it like he does. He is not claiming 320 odd. If he isn't, I'm not sure why any one else would.
