Els talking before his round going thru his clubs said his 2 iron went about 235 yards, 3 iron 225 yards and 4 iron about 210 yards (might not be exactly what he said but wouldn't be more than 5 yards out either way but 2 iron was definitely less than 240. Queue his tee shot on the 230 yard par 3 17th and commentator says ernie's playing his 5 iron but it's probably a bit too much for els and surprised he wasn't playing his 6 iron. Now the wind was with him but it certainly didn't look like a 3+ club difference.

think els could be talking in british distances (pretty sure he has a house near wentworth). which are shorter than PGA distances due to heat.

add a whole lot of temperature and a wind behind and taadaa so to speak.

Phil

I'm pretty sure Els would be talking about his 'stock' shot and not his forum yardages, they tend not to compare willies on the Tour. Wouldn't surprise me if he could comfortably hit his 6-iron 200yds off a tee peg.

But surely he would need to be playing a dunlop to get Forum average yards?

Forum yardages are normally into the wind, gripped down and smoothly swung.... Dunlop would certainly help this... or 1978 blades.

Did he hit the green?

Commentator suggested the 5 iron was too big for els and would have to hit a nice smooth one. Suggesting it was a stock 5 iron.

I'm not sure where the interview was recorded but I assumed it was taken on the practice ground before the pga.

No lies. He may hit his stock 3 iron 225 on the range, but there are multiple adjustments for elevation, temperature, green shape and flag position and where the hazards lie, among others.

If he was playing a hole with firm greens and a back pin with hazrads behind, he may want to carry a shorter distance and run it up. If the flag was front on a softer green with hazards in front, he may want to carry it a bit more and take the safer line.

Pro's don't think about yardages like most of us do, they usually swing within themselves and I would imagine Ernie was talking about his stock yardages with each club. Outside of those yardages he can quite easily add or remove yardage as he needs it. You have to remember that these guys aren't just thinking about distance, they're thinking about flight\spin etc. Ernie could probably have used his 3i but maybe he wanted to come into the green with more height or Spin?

When we spoke to Paddy about yardages last year at Carton House he pretty much dismissed the question saying there's no point asking how far he hits an 8i because he can hit it anywhere between 130 and 170 (can't remember the exact figures but that was the gist).

I know what you're saying it's very possible and probably the most likely explanation but it just seems strange for such a marked difference. His shot looked like a straight forward hit to me and wasn't trying to turn the ball too much or play it high or low but I could be wrong

I agree there may be multiple adjustments just didn't look to so much to explain the huge difference in club selection. The commentator thought he should be using a 6 iron. Taking 10 yards gap between clubs that would his yardage for a 6 iron around the 190 mark. To a hole that's 230 that's quite a difference and I don't if that 230 is to the front of the green or not.

Els will be talking about where the ball pitches, Forum 'big williies' will be counting the 50 yards run from the thinned shot.
