who's lying?

The tour pros always have 3 different shots with every iron as standard. Big high one soft one, standard hit and the low punchy stinger for into the wind. All those shots have a different outcome when they land, but also hit with different swings so you will get a large variation in distances. If I want to hit a low stinger into the wind, I am swinging slower to stay in control of the shot and keep the backspin down, also the ball is back in my stance to try and launch it lower. I easily loose a club of distance when doing this. I remember years ago watching Tiger hit a big high 6i 220 yards flat out as that was the only shot he could have played and it worked. But that distance is more like his 4i with a standard swing.

I would assume his yardages are based on what he classes as a stock shot, not a hard low punch etc. Would also assume it doesn't take into account altitude and humidty which could effect it.

Plus I doubt he has any Pinnacle Gold super duper forum distance balls in his bag to add the extra 70 yards on his wedge.

Els will be talking about where the ball pitches, Forum 'big williies' will be counting the 50 yards run from the thinned shot.

Ok but assuming the yardage given of 230 war to the centre of the green and the hole was towards the back making it closer to 240 yards. How many yards was the commentator thinking els was playing for from his 6 iron with a stock yardage of less than 200. Considering the hole has water at the front of the green and he took a full swing I doubt he was planning for a shot with a whole lot of run.

For the record I'm not saying els is a short hitter, far from it, but what he said and what the commentator said just doesn't add up for me.

How about.........

230 yards to the pin (at the back of a firm green), maybe 200-210 yards to carry the rubbish and let the ball run out plus a little bit of breeze = 190 yard shot?
