Ain't bought one for years and years, after starting the game again after a long lay off I'm looking at buying a mag or two to peruse. Are there any which are more suited for high handicappers, ones which offer lots of tips and game improvement sections? Cheers Martyn

3 replies well esp the last two that i thought of posting but didnt .. i think the key part of the question is

"are there any which are more suited for high handicappers,"

In reply, Martyn i think you will find most mags the same re advice & tips and if your a high handicapper some of it may be lost in translation to you , thats where Golf Monthly exceed the rest , they are better (IMO) at explaining stuff & you can always pop on here and ask the guys & girls about the article or the tip & it will be explained or you will be helped with it if its possible ..

You should however read a couple of different ones & find the one you prefer & that appeals to you , we are all biast twords GM & it is officialy the number 1 in the golf mag business .. plus you can contact & converse with the people @ GM and they let us contribute handsomely to the mag , which in turn is rewarded with great opportunities to win great prizes

Tbf you was only going to get one answer when asking on the Golf Monthly forum. Quite a few decent golf mags but I'd definitely go for Golf monthly.

Thanks for the replies, I'll nip in to t' Asda on my way home and buy GM. I knew I may get stung for asking but it was an honest question...honest ;)
Thing is I used to play drums up until a couple of years ago and I know that drum mags differ drastically, some are just ad after ad for manufacturers and the odd interview with a "famous" player, others have page after page of lessons and tips etc which is right up my street.

I think GM have the balance just right with features, product testing, interviews and tips. OK i am slightly biased as A. I am on their forum! B. They kindly picked me for a free set of clubs from Taylormade, but thats my honest answer. I used to read todays golfer, and i will still pick it up if i have read that months GM and need a fix, but GM is my no.1 choice.

I subscribe to the three main players - Golf Monthly, Today's Golfer and Golf World, and buy the occasional copy of Bunkered.

GM is the pick of the crop, great features and easy to understand tuition features.. and I'm not just saying that because of the forum;
TG, I find to be quite heavily punctuated with ads, sometimes too much so, but its instruction is good and easy to follow.
GW, afaik is published by the same folk who do TG, I reckon is aimed more at the enthusiast with a bit of ready cash and some of its instruction I find to be really long-winded and not easily digestable.

Hi Martyn. If you email me michael_harris@ipcmedia.com your home address I'll send the last three issues to you and you can have a look at what we have to offer. I think it offers the best mix out there... then again I would say that!

As a current subscriber to all 3 (GM, TG and GW) I would compare the mags like this.

Golf Monthly is more like a traditional golf club, lots of history and tradition, some of the members are quite progressive and friendly but can be a little old fashioned at times. Caters for the more well heeled possibly slightly older member and looks after its own well. Jacket and tie in the dining room at all times.

Golf World is more of a newer, slightly less traditional course, possibly one of those American courses with big PGA greens, lots of variety on the holes. Membership consists of a mix of old and some young ones. Has been known to allow open necked shorts in the dining room on some evenings

And Todays Golfer is a newer club with a mostly younger membership who wear the latest gear. The course is a bit brash, possibly not the most classic of courses and looked down on by the more traditional clubs around, but a good test with a thriving junior section. Most popular item of clothing in the dining room are jeans.

I've said it a few times before but each mag has good editions, and some times the mags can get a bit boring and samey. Personally I think Todays Golfer has upped its game a bit recently and is currently my favourite if I had to pick one. But then again I am a sucker for comparison reviews of golf gear, and I can get a lot out of every one. Also I tend not to read the instruction bits as I stick to Mark Crossfields app for that, plus I have far too many swing thoughts in my head already.

A good test is also to read the letters page and see what the topics for discussion are and what the mag thinks are worth of publishing. As that can tell you a lot about the mag in my opinion.

I have the ipad subscription to GM. I read this on my trip to Manchester last week.

I popped into WH Smiths on Friday as I was wanting another read for my trip to Manchester on Friday . I picked up a copy of Bunkered... I have never read so much crap in my life. Articals were terrible, the self help guide photos did not match the text and just generally a rubbish read.

When in Manchester I downloaded an older magazine on the ipad and read this on the train back North on Saturday
