Which County has the Least Well Respected Golf Courses

For me we have in the North East the following that are top drawer golf courses -

Goswick.

After that there are many 'nice' courses like Northumberland,Slaley,Rockcliffe,Close House,Seaton Carew but none that should be even threatening being a Top 100 Course.

Scottish Borders - Again a few 'nice' courses but none that should be spoken about in the elite league of golf courses.
I'll be able to see it next September, so looking forward to it.

They may be nice courses, but are they "top drawer"? Most times people mention the North East - Slaley is always mentioned normally. I've played there and whilst it was good, it wasn't brilliant, and also took 3 and 1/2 hours to play 13 holes - i also belive this is the norm.

I also played Seahouses and walked part of Bamburgh castle, which looked nice. They are nowhere near top 100 though.

Whether a course is in the "Top 100 " of whatever/whoever compiles that................."top drawer"......hmmm.....let me see....."The Lee Westwood Colt Course" not long ago built at Close House cost 10 million to build and I hear is £100 a game for visitors.....I think that should just about entitle it to "top drawer" status....Its only 5/6 miles from me but sadly I cant see myself ever playing it,couldnt afford it.
Ive played Slaley and agree with you on it......my first game I thought it was great, after 3 games 'just' good.

Ive played Goswick a few times and as its been an Open qualifier in the past would think that gets it "top drawer" status from golfers in general.Personally I don't rate it as highly as its rated,as its links, not my cup of tea.

I haven't played Seahouses but from what Ive been told its your bog standard nice course that the North East is full of.

Personally I think the title of the thread "the least respected county for golf courses" is negative and derogatory.....and just set a precedence for people to slag areas/golf courses.......has that happened?.....maybe as I noticed comments like "my area is crap for courses"......I'm a golfer who just wouldn't slag/put down golf courses..its just disrespectful to the course and its members.

I'm a believer EVERY golf course in Britain has some GOOD SIDE to it.........

Cheers

I would love to see the review section in the magazine have a look at this. GM send someone out to a county which is not renowned for its golf course and report back on the hidden gems that it finds that should be on the 'must play list'. After all, who needs a magazine to tell you that if you head to the Northwest etc then you may find the odd decent golf course.

I've had in mind for a while to do something along these lines, Greg, based largely around counties that have somehow thus far eluded me in nearly 30 years. Interestingly, they are generally the counties that have been mentioned most in this thread.

Fingers crossed I can make something happen next year...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I love links courses.

I played Munis for 12 years so any private course was a step up and I was well impressed, then great private clubs impressed me more, open qualifiers more so, then you play somewhere like Carnoustie and you think it is top of the tree.

Then you play Formby, Turnberry, Hillside, St. Andrews, Prestwick, Royal Lytham, St. Mellion. Next thing you know courses you would have given 9/10 for are only 6/10 as your tastes have improved/changed.

I don't know the OP's intentions, but going on reputation most people would say for a great golfing tour go to Ayrshire coast, East Lothians, Southport coast, Kent coast and maybe some others.

I think most travelling golfers don't mention the NE (and some of the people from there, also say the same) no doubt there are some good golf courses. I'm not slagging off the NE, but on reputation it's not a golfing mecca.

Seahouses has some crap holes "over the road", but had some great holes on the sea side, and some great par 3's. I think it was Bamburgh castle that had some lovely views, but only seen part of the course, as was out walking, not playing golf.

Rockcliffe is bland, Wynyards front nine is good. Seaton Carew is canny, but wouldn't rush to play it.
