The question about where you would be a member with unlimited funds got me thinking about High End golf clubs near me.

Aside from Woodhall Spa, there really are not that many well known golf clubs in Lincolnshire and, spread it a bit wider, you can add Rutland, much of Leicestershire and (though my knowledge of the areas is more limited) possibly much of Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire to areas where I do not know many renowned courses. There are plenty of decent enough, middle of the range courses but very few that would ever challenge the top 100 or even 200.

So, when it comes to what are seen as top golf courses, is the East Midlands as barren as it gets or are there areas with even fewer.

Both Gloucestershire and Wiltshire are bereft of really good courses IMO

as a leicestershire native it pains me to agree with you, we are lacking in really top top courses, although we have lots of decent mature parkland tracks nothing to trouble the top 200.

Tyne and wear off the top of my head, if your talking top 100 for GB & I.

Would spread it wider than that, aside from Woodhall Spa I am hard pressed to think of many in the whole of the East Midlands that would fall into peoples' 'want to play there list' or even many that non locals would have heard of. You may be able to add Gog Magog in Cambridgeshire to that category and, at a push, you may add Seacroft in Skegness and Forest Pines maybe but that is about it (and all of those are nearly a 2 hour round trip from South Lincolnshire).

Get to Ganton in north Yorks though, great course. Ive heard good things about Seaton Carew in Cleveland. I've stood on the first tee, but as everyone says, the industrial landscape can take away from the overall experience. Slaley is ok, but if it's the top end of your counties' courses, then it doesn't look great, at the top end scale. I can imagine that there is 30+ in Merseyside and Lancashire that are better than Slaley.

Unfortunately, for me, Derbyshire is pretty bereft of top courses. Kedleston, Cavendish & Horsley are the top one's IMO.

Keep away from Breadsall Priory, it may get a good write up on Golf Breaks/YGT but it's terrible.

A few people say good things about Stapleford Park but I am not a fan. Other than that I am stumped.

The spine of the country, basically from Woburn until you get as far north as Woodhall Spa is pretty barren of decent courses. The majority of top courses in these isles are concentrated in a few smallish areas sadly

For such a large county Lincolnshire does not have many apart from the obvious ones. There are some good courses in south links, Spalding, Stoke rochford, Belton and boston west is very good for a pay and play. But nothing that would make anyone's must play courses.

I wonder how many people live within 20 miles of a course that they would put in their must play top 20. For me it is 1, woodhall spa is 5 miles from me.
Why are you not a member then and how often do you play Woodhall?

I think you have to got to be right. Not many fantastic courses in the area just plenty off good ones. Lincolnshire on the whole with 50 clubs is fairly poor I reckon as well. Apart from Woodhall there are lots of good courses but nothing special.

Hollinwell in Nottinghamshire is always in the business end of the top 100 course surveys. Also Sherwood Forest is a quality track that is moving up the top 100 course list
