Which club?

I'd go for a choked down 3/4 swing 53* gap wedge.

How would you play it Bob?

pw, middle of the grip, 10-2

Interesting to see how many people chose gw, sw or lw

As I said, no right or wrong way, just curious

On a separate note bob, are there any putting drills you recommend with the v easy

If you're 4 putting I'm guessing your distance control isn't brilliant.
Practice your distance by varying the length of the backswing, not how hard you hit it.
Imagine a pendulum in a clock...the further back you swing, the further the ball will roll.

54* wedge 3/4 swing right at the flag and try to stop it dead with one bounce.

Going by my recent efforts I'd be lucky to hit the green... :(

It is, but I'm working on it.

I'm ok in bounce games, but still a bit twitchy under pressure. I've recently been laying up to 75 yards to get some practice. Seems to be getting better, but not there yet. One of this years aims is to get comfortable at this sort of distance.

Next time you have a chance, try this...
Swing back with your arms then hit it with your chest.
In other words, on your downswing, turn your chest through the shot and finish with your upper body pointing at the target :)

Sounds like a recipe for toe poking it off at right angles!

I would hook it into a nearby garden through the trees, knock it back onto the fairway only to hook my next shot left of the green under more trees, to get the ball to stop close to the pin I would need to hit it high so I'd likely catch a branch dead on and have the same chip from a different angle, this time conscious of the tree I would leave it short and 2 putt for a 7. Or I might just hit a 3/4 52 wedge from the back foot down the shaft and hope to check up on the 2nd bounce

In the group I play in thats a gimme, I keep damaging the pins smashing them in the cup from that sort of range so we just agreed to leave it off.

Well I would look.. Can I putt? - No

Can I bump and run my 8 iron- Not much chance due to bunkers

Can I stop a PW pitch? Probably not, about 1/3 flight/ run ratio

Can I stop a gap wedge pitch? 2/3 flight run ratio- probably not

Can I stop a sand wedge? 4/5 flight/run yes but will it carry the bunkers? Probably yes but its close.

Full 60 reach? No- flirting with bunkers.

1/2 SW reach? Yes

Full SW- probably too far

For me its a toss up between a SW pitch or a 1/2 sand wedge depending on the space between the flag and the bunkers.

I would go with my instinct which is to fly it as I confident in my ability. But if I could pitch it and it feels right I would.

Very tough shot Bob, one I have no idea and no experience of how I would play it. I need a lesson on this area and to spend time learning my distances.
