we spoke to our head greenkeeper today while my mate and i played a few holes, he said he was quite upset that a member had told him that the course should have been closed today due to the amount of rain we've had. we agreed the course was quite heavy going, but not water logged and no lasting damage would be caused with maybe only 40 players out on the day. so who says close the course ? some noall member who knows f/all or or the person employed by the club. ?

Our course seems to close when there is standing water on the greens, it was open today but very wet underfoot, sometimes it was hard finding a anywhere to take relief from standing water.

A local course I know never closes, but I did hear a conversation the pro had with someone over the phone, "yes the course is open, but its unplayable"

Has to be the greenkeepers call. My place is a private members club so not always the problem of balancing green fee revenue with keeping an unplayable course open. I don't always like it when they shut it although at my place it is frost and snow more than waterlogging but I abide by it and hit the range instead

An old head a ours has always said the course shuts itself and members should recognise it, cups full of rainwater and standing water on the greens.

it was a bald head who said it at our club . but members should go thro the greens convener with any problems they have. not directly to h/ green keeper

It's often a decision taken between the Pro and Head Green Keeper. In cases of fog or lightning for example the Pro normally decides to close the course.

It can be a tougher commercial call on courses that have Hotels and groups have travelled long distances to play, also the loss of revenue becomes a factor that can affect the decision.

greenkeepers call every time he knows the course and what the condition is, and knows the damage that could be caused if play was allowed, most clubs close the course as a last resort so the decision is not taken lightly,as for the hotel chains i think most of them have usga type greens or are on links courses so less likely to close.
