Whats the rule

Playing in todays medal,a player hits the ball in a clump of trees finds his ball and its unplayable is it a drop 2 club lengths or can you go back as far as you want behind the hazard,i thought it was 2 clubs pro shop shut when we got back in

2 club lengths no nearer the hole or back in line with the flag as far as you like or go back to where he hit it from in the first place....

BTW Tress are trees not a hazard....

If your are taking a penalty drop, it is always two club lengths, a free drop is only one.

But the free drop is one club length from the nearest point of relief, whilst the penalty is two clubs from where the ball lies.
