Whats the bare essentials a Newbie needs then???

Ok so i was looking at a starter set but a few people have said maybe get some second hand stuff, so my question is what should i be getting to start off my golf bag, thinking what range of irons 4 to pw? how many woods 3 or or both? do i need a driver? do i need a hybrid? obviously need a putter and then a bag to finish it off....
any pointers would be great

3 wood Mayb a hybrid. Irons and putter best take a trip to a pro shop and hit a couple of demo clubs before deciding which set you like but I'd say leave driver out just now

Considering the time of year we have do you intend playing right through the winter......

If you do i would consider a decent rain suit and brolly for a start. Oh and before i forget waterproof shoes......Get these into your budget early as there's nothing worse than playing in bad weather with a suit that leaks....It puts a downer on everything......

That said get your bag 2nd hand if possible and after that you'll get some decent irons on flea bay for handy money as some of the lads in the other post have said.....

As ypu said your starting out so look at Game improvement sets of irons as these will have the forgivness you need......

Im not trying to push brands or anything but you could do alot worse than a 2nd hand set of Cobra SZ irons....you should be able to get them handy....

Get a cheap putter that doesnt have to break the bank again.....stay away from a driver for now and either get a 3 or 4 wood or a hybrid if your budget stretches to it.......

I would suggest a 3 wood and a set of Wilson Di7's (£150 approx) a sand wedge and a good putter. A second hand bag will set you back £30 so you could get the lot for £220ish.

The only good thing is that patience is free if you can find it.

I would get a putter, sand wedge and 3 wood plus the irons. You could always get a half set of irons as to be honest you probably only use half of them anyway.

And as the previous post said lots of cheap balls, your going to need them.

A mate of mine has literally just taken up the game for the first time and he went out and bought some clubs including a 60 and a 64 degree wedge!! I told him that no one uses a 64 because theyre too hard to use and a 60 will only be useful once hes improved to a certain standard.

I told him he should take the clubs back to the shop. he asked if he should buy one of those chipper clubs instead. Having only used them on the putting mats in golf shops before I didnt really know much about them other than that they were really easy to use, so I gambled and told him it would be a great addition to his bag. Sure enough he loves it and is now decent at chip shots.

So I would recommend getting one of those to start out with!
