What 'rules' have you broken yourself in comps?

I took a drop from cart path - I ended up dropping and playing from the correct place but didn't arrive at that conclusion properly, missing out a drop in between.

The fairway bunkers on the derby where riddled with big stones last year so I put a battered 7 iron in my bag to use out of the said bunkers. I know thats not cheating but the 15 clubs it took me upto is! Not splattering my shiny i20's for anyone. bunkers are fantastic this year

Why is the standard Local Rule for stones in bunkers not in place? Apart from anything else, it's got to be a Health and Safety issue if they are riddled with big stones.

You would be there all day moving the stones. The heath and safety issue was the reason for them fixing the problem

Presidents cup final, hit my drive down 9 into the rough, and while walking up to it accidentally kicked it, called a penalty on myself, lost the hole. Was one up going down 18, he chipped in to take it to a play off and I lost on the second play off hole

Too many to mention. :o

My excuse - was very early in my golfing career when I "listened to" experienced golfers  little knowing that they were teaching me their "made up" rules.

Worst one was being persuaded by FCs that I could not drop out of an area of staked trees, as it would mean I would have a clear shot to the green. After the round, while standing at the scorer's table I was informed by the group behind us that I was DQ'd as I should have taken relief from the trees and didn't correct the error! Had a respectable score too in only my third ever club comp!

After that incident, I re-read the whole rule book once through and sections of it repeatedly over the next few months just so that I could argue with the so-called rules "gurus".
