Sadly I am also with the gardener. You agreed to his quote, he didnt give an estimate, and as you said you were pleased with his work. Therefore you should have paid the agreed figure. The fact he got it done to a satisfactory standard in a lesser time isn't really here or there. He has done what you wanted to a standard you are happy with.
