Having read Boabskis post on the best golf shot people have seen, whilst talking to a mate about how my round went last sunday it gave me the idea to do this.

As you by now might have guessed what I believe to be the best golf shot I have ever played came on the sunday just gone. I was in a bunker about 45 yards away with the pin 5 yards on in a greensomes competition (Grrr yes my partner put me in there after I had nailed a drive 270 down the middle as had happened numerously on the day ) the ball was semi plugged in wet, moderately heavy sand and I decided to take my lob wedge, made a full aggressive swing with it holding the face open a bit and proceeded to pitch it about an inch from the hole after which it spun back to about 1 foot away- not even my less than adequate partner could miss that! the reason for this being my best is because it is the exact shot I envisaged when deciding on that club, I knew I had to go for the flag as we were 4 down at this stage despite myself playing the best I have all year and boy was that frustrating. It was extravagant and risky and I pulled it off. A player from the opposing pair who plays off 3 said he would have taken being on the green from there and has rarely seen someone get any where near the flag from this specific bunker :D

Come on then lets have them... try and give some insight into the situation as well as this is what often elevates a particular shot over others, if it is a pressure situation or something.

You are not going to believe this, but I played the almost identical shot two weeks running on the 18th at Highwoods.
A good friend of mine who plays of 9 and myself took on a mate at work and his Dad, who are both members of the above course.
The mate at work also plays off 9 and hits the ball a country mile, miles past me.
Anyway, the 18th at Highwoods is a fairly short par 4 where the bigger hitters can open up and have a bash at the green.
We go to the 18th all square.
My mate tees off puts a ball nicely up the fairway, I follow suit leaving myself an easy wedge into the green.
The kiddie from work decides to go for the green, tugs it left slightly and ends up with a nasty little pitch back up onto the cut stuff. He eventually plays up, two putts regulation par.
My partner plays next, hits a nice wedge to the centre of the green.
The other guys Dad is effectively out of it.
My turn...and I clipped this wedge up and put it to within two feet stone dead.
Tapped the putt in for a birdie and we won the match on the last.

The following week we've got a rematch.
Last hole, same situation, all square.
To cut a long(ish) story short, the other three play up onto the green, my turn again and I'm faced with an identical shot to the week before. I could see my mate looking at me and smiling, my other mate from work said "you'd better not do what you did last week".
I clipped the wedge again, I knew it was perfect the minute it left the club. Came down, bounced once and spun back, hit the stick and stopped on the edge of the hole!
Nobody could believe it (least of all me!)...

My best was the last hole in a comp I won by 1 stroke.
I had duffed my tee shot and had about 310 yds to the green, I decided that in order to finish with a really good score, I should get as close as poss and leave a small finish in the hope of par.
From a light rough lie and hitting between two trees and going over the top of a small bush a little way ahead with DRIVER!I struck the ball perfectly and got great kick-on running right onto the green and birdied the hole.

I was much younger and more foolish then.lol

In my very short and still unskillful efforts one remarkable shot occurred a couple of months back. Myself ,the lad and his mate had completed the back nine first to avoid a competition and had tee'd off on the first (par 4) my second shot was wayward and landed about 100 yds short of the green with a huge oak tree in front and no bump and run shot available as a large bunker protected my line to the pin. I took out my pitching wedge which brought out a responce of 'no chance' as I told them I was going for it over the top of the tree.I gave it a full bloodied swing and the ball cleared the tree and the bunker and pitched four foot from the pin and stopped dead.... gasps all round and I nailed the putt for my first ever birdie!!
I'm a bit more cautious now and probably wouldn't try it again.

Driving the green on our 342x par 4 7th - lots of run.
I'm very simple - love it when the big dog barks properly

Too many good shots over a career that started when I was 10 to pick out just one. Have hot a few great shots recently with my new swing but I guess the best shot I've played in the last 12 months was the pitch from just off the green at 18 to a foot to hole the putt and win last months stableford.

After a year of making the buffer zone just twice all season to actually play a really consistent round and make a good up and down reinvigorated my belief in my ability and my love for the game

Can I have your autograph :D

Just kidding thinking about it, it will probably be quite difficult for some of our veteran players to decide upon this, so the best shot that springs to mind will obviously suffice.

Average 50 rounds a year over 20 years, 85 shots per round - oh my god, you're asking me to pick the best of 85,000 shots!!!

I've got a load of candidates, but that has blown me away!!!

The one that stands out most is a four iron into the 18th green at Carnoustie. I had hit a good drive and was on the left side of the fairway just level with the first of the three bunkers on the RHS of the fairway. I took the practice swing, stepped up to the ball and then took the swing. As the ball took off I knew it was as perfect a shot as I was likely to hit. I watched as the ball flew the burn, pitched just short of the green and ran up into the middle of the green.

In that instant I was a golfer!

Five minutes later, after I'd missed my birdie putt, I realised I was a mere mortal after all.

If I close my eyes and think of that 18th hole I can still see my 'perfect' iron shot.

MY best shot was a lob shot about 20 yards out of the rough i had long grass a bunker in front of me and a steep left to right slope in front of me with the pin in the middle of a 10 yrd wide green.. i hit it high and it landed about 2ft left of the whole and span sideways to finish 2 foot right of the whole.. it looked spectacular and i had the highest sense of achievement for pulling the shot off!

The best shot that I have evre played was about a year ago, whilst practising on the course late afternoon. I was under a line of tree's about 220 yds from the green with a carry of 210 as a nice big bunker at the front of the green, pin cut about 15 yds on right hand side. I pulled out my 3wd and took a few practice swings with the idea to shoot the ball out low and rising towards the end of the shot and landing softly, a bit ambitious you make think, but nothing is to hard for a 17 year old boy, the only downside was that I ahd no idea how to play the shot. The resulting shot was not as I had imagined, but can't really complain as I had no idea how to play the shot in the first place, however the shot that I did played was a nice draw that fizzed out around the tree's lower branches and just kept going. It seemed as though it would never fall to the ground, the ball eventually pitched pin high on the right hand side of the green and only had a foot and a half of roll. I duely rolled in the 6ft putt for eagle, my first eagle :).

In a club match years ago I played my best shot and it was a putt.

I had the honour on a drivable dog-leg par 4 and being 2 up after 7 I played safe with an iron to the dogleg. My opponent pulled out his driver and let fly. The ball finished 20 feet from the pin. My wedge finished just inside his ball so he had first putt and lagged it to 6 inches. A gimme. My turn. It was tricky ,slightly downhill, slightly left to right but not too much.

It was never in doubt as soon as it left the putter. As I picked my ball from the hole I could see the look of total disbelief on his face. His shoulders dropped. I'd got him. Sure enough a run of pars and it was all over on the 13th.

Only a 20 ft putt, but in the context of the match a defining moment.

an utterly innocuous and otherwise meaningless shot, no prizes, no contest at stake

first year of playing (last year), gorgeous summer evening, not a cloud in sight and hardly a sound out of place. maybe for the first time a perfectly struck drive, the sort you never hear and never feel, where the ball just appears in your line of vision rising up in the blue. then, when it falls it just seems to run forever.

Found the water from the tee on our par 3 17th island green 3 weeks ago. I played A second and it just missed the green pin high off to the right. As we plodded up to the green I said to my oppo watch this, I am going to chip this in just to make up for the 3 off tee.

I was joking but thought wouldn't it be great if I did, so I took a little more prep than usual. I wreckon it was a good 40ft with a big right to left last part of run, down hill. (the guys who played last week might be able to picture it, I was near the bridge and the pin was back left of the green)

I took my seven iron out and studied the line for about a minute, imagining the line over and over and then picked my point. I had to aim about 10 ft right and play it as a 20 yard shot so i didnt roll off the other side and at worst into the drink.

As soon as it left the face (it was pefectly struck aswell which always feels nice) I knew it was in, we both watched in slow motion as it just effortlessly glided to the hole and Davethepro said its in, half way there. We both couldn't beleive it as it dropped and high fived all the way to the 18th. He said, the best part about the shot was the fact you said you were going to hole it and I knew you meant it when you spent a good minute picking your line!

Prestwick St Nicholas on our Scottish tour earlier this year. Had been playing like a dork all week so had left all the woods in the car and went round with just irons. Wasn't doing too badly.

At 14th decided to tee off with the three iron and creamed what I thought was a damn fine 210 yarder but just off the left edge of the fairway. Left about another 205 to middle of green. Having just hit the 3i, thought same club would be required to get to green but far too much risk of duffing it or slashing a stupendous hook (as is my normal want). So decided that laying up with the 5i was the more sensible option. Gave it a swing and the ball just sang off the clubface with a click and fizzed off into the distance. Am afraid I rather let out a "f***ing hell" as I watched it disappear. One bounce and it stopped in the heart of the green with an 8footer for birdie. (Missed it!)

But the card was the one that got me my 20 handicap....

This year, funnily enough.

Par 3, 237 yarder! Hit a 5 wood as well as I've EVER struck a ball and it ended up 2 inches short of the hole. Perfect flight. Landed soft as a butterfly.

Had just birdied the previous hole and shot my first ever level par round that day. I will never strike a ball sweeter and even though I've had a hole in one and 2 albatrosses before they just didn't compare to the way I hit that 5 wood. Now if I can just get close to that swing again!

Best I can recall is this year at Nairn on the longish par 3 14th. This is how it's described -

"One of the hardest par threes in Scotland - and not only because it is 200 yards plus. A huge green with a variety of fearful slopes makes holing out a fraught affair".

I blocked my tee shot right of green into light rough but pin high, eyed up and walked an extremely difficult chip shot from light rough to a monster green then to roll across initially the flat right hand side of green into a cavernous hollow on the back left of green where the pin was located to the rear of.
Nudged the ball out ok and it rolled over the flat part but only just to the edge of the crater, it trickled over, started to gather speed on these lightning quick surfaces and heading right now, rolled all the way round this bowl-shaped hollow and unbelievably dropped for a very unlikely 2. ;)
Shot seemed to take about a minute watching it.
T'is the most excited I've got over a golf shot in decades. Was my version of TW's Masters chip!
Proceeded to drive 15th green for another birdie - good times! :)

I have only had a couple or three memorable shoot this year:

1. The Jubilee Golf Monthly challenge and it was the Par 3 9th 203 yards and I told the guys I was going to hood my 4 iron and draw it round the bump at the front of the green. It worked a dream and MikeH and PaulOH were gutted.

2. The hooded 4 iron again but this time it was the Forum day out at the Glen and again I called it and it got me the prize for nearest the pin.

3. The PGA course at The Belfry and I carried the green on the 324 yard Par4 16th and got the ball to 8ft and missed the Eagle putt.

Mine was more a best hole that a best shot...... you know one of those that just comes together at the right time.

I was playing better ball (in a club match), and had just about held my own, in terms of supporting my partner, but not really done anything spectacular.

Any way we reached the 16th (which is a 458yd par 4), which I had never parred before!!!!

Any way I hit a fairly decent drive up the left side, leaving about 185 ish. Took out the 4 iron, and absolutely flushed it, carried the bunker and landed about 10-12 feet away.

As i approach the green, I'm thinking roll it up to the hole, walk off with the half and its dormie 2 up.

To cut a long story short the put dropped and we won the match 3&2.

And for that short spine tingling moment I felt like a golfer.....

Normal service was resumed rapidly!!!
