I currently use a 52 & 58

Need to get new ones, both are well worn. I was thinking I rarely use the 58 deg. Just for bunker shots. I'm thinking a 56 deg might be enough for me. Or a 52,56,60 combination. But I don't think I'd ever use a 60 deg. Remember an interview with G Mac where he said amateurs should lose the lob wedge. my pw is 48 deg

Anyone here not carry a high lofted wedge? How does it work out for u?

I have two Vokeys, a 52/8 and a 56/11. The 56 is hardly ever used apart from bunkers and the occasional high lob shot. My 52 is my preferred wedge and apart from my putter probably the most used club in my bag.

i carry 50,54 and 58. The 50 is my go to wedge for chipping and pitching, use the 58 if I need to come in higher, and the 54 mainly for bunker shots. Use all 3 for 3/4 and full shots into the green depending on yardage required

56 is the most lofted I go, use it for inside 100 yards and bunkers. Used to carry a 60, but found it to be more trouble than it was worth so replaced it with an 18 deg hybrid.

54 56 and 58 but the 56 has 14* of bounce and I really only use it in bunkers. I am thinking of tweeking the 54 back to 52 though

Are you using my clubs Steve...?

Something potor and I discussed yesterday, my highest is a 56 mainly for bunkers. I can hit my 52 quite high and stop it quickly because I trust its loft, I do not lean the shaft far forward. It helps a lot to use balls that spin too.

A 60* wedge is mainly for those players who have not learnt to trust the loft of the club yet, like all their other wedges they deloft the 60 by about 4-8*. The other group are those who use distance balls and although they get a high flight with other wedges the ball rolls out too much and the 60 is required for tighter pins.

I think one or two Tour Pros might not agree with you on that one - and a few decent amateurs too.....

A 60 is no different to a 56 or a 50 - you just need to practice with it, commit to the shot . You also need to use it in the correct situation.

I carry a 52, 56 and 60...

The 52 is purely an approach club for fullish shots, the 56 is an approach shot and my pitching club (anywhere 60 yards and in) and the 60 is purely for around the green when i need to get up and over something.

Like Imurg says, practice is one aspect and the other is know when to hit it and when just to leave it in the bag, which in reality can be said about any 50:50 shot you play.

I used to carry a 52/56/60 combination but found that I rarely used the 60. Any situation that needed it I found I could just open the face of the 56 a little. So I ditched it and added a CLK hybrid in it's place. Best move ever for me.

Tinkering with a 64 degree at the moment, putting it back a little in the stance still gives a good high chip height, not tried it outside 25 yards and that is the way it will stay. Not sure yet if it will stay in the bag for the new season.

My current highest loft is 56*

I used to carry a 60*, but dropped it for a hybrid.

Having said this I may go back to the 60* again and drop the hybrid

And I had you down as an educated man  ;)

I used to carry a 64. I loved it. We had a drivable par 4, with a very (5 paces max across at it's narrowest) narrow green, kidney shaped, and raised about 5 foot, with almost vertical banks. Bunkers either side. The 64 was perfect for getting up onto the green, and stopping it dead.

When I moved courses, it went in the wheelie bin. Too high risk, and can't imagine when I'd ever need it again.

58 max for me now. I can play any shot I want with it, and many I don't want.

I have recently changed my wedges from 54 and 60 to a 52 and 58.
And the results have been very positive.
The 60 was a great club, however occasionally if used on the wrong lie it was
a liability.
Also its important you have the right bounce for your bunkers and lies.
Funnily enough i was watching a Luke Donald instruction a couple of days ago
and he says that he uses his 60 degree for all his chips.

56* with 13* of bounce...

Mainly use the 49* gap wedge for chipping. I open the 56 a bit if necessary. I have hit 60* wedges occasionally and found them inconsistent, although I guess practice would solve that. I would rather have options at the other end of the bag than carry a lob wedge.

Like Donald carries one so your probably right
