Hi All

Getting back into golf after 20ish years away and was wondering what happend to 1 irons as i can remember lots of players did carry them but they seam to have faded out.. also manufacturers dont even seam to make them.

Thanks

So would most players hit a hybrid off the fairway ?

Im off 16 and have tried hitting hybrid off the fairway and am terrible i have much more success with a 3 iron

hybrids are my favourite clubs.

They are much easier to get consistent distance and accuracy with less effort than a corresponding low iron.

20 years ago a 1 iron was probably 16/17 degrees (guessing, never had one). With the lofts of clubs gradually creeping lower and lower a 1 iron would be almost unhittable now.

If you really want one your best bet is trawling eBay for an old Ping Eye or similar.

ye i am thinking of a Ping ISI

I have a 17 deg hybrid and an 18 deg 2 iron and marginally prefer the 2 iron for consistency. I hit the hybrid further but struggle at times with my 20 deg hybrid. I am no great golfer off 14 but a 2 iron seems to suit my swing.

when i first started playing many many moons ago i had a mcgregor 1 iron that i used when it was really hard and dry conditions ,even if i skulled it it would run miles.i now have a ping 1 iron being given to me when i next see my brother in law as he cant hit it .

Ping eye 2 1 iron I used to have was 16 degrees. My current 3 iron is 21 degrees so would expect 2 iron at 18 and then 1 iron at 15, not much different albeit my irons are far more traditional lofts than some

As others have said they were basically replaced by driving irons and hybrid clubs. I personally use an 18 degree srixon u45 iron and it goes about the same as an old callaway 1 iron I still have.

In answer to the question people stopped using or buying them because they were bloomin difficult to use. Only a niche group of players wanted them and there isn't much money in that. If you're buying one of eBay I'm guessing you'll not have many other bidders competing against you 😀

Advice when caught in a lightning storm when on the golf course is to hold a 1 iron above your head...because even God can't hit a 1 iron

PP of mine bought a Mizuno MP H5 1 iron he likes it.

I have one of these as a 3 iron and really like it. From that go to a 1 hybrid but could easily swap it for his 1 iron

Not got any fairways never been a massive fan
