What happend to 1 irons, why nobody use them or even make them anymore.

I have a 17 degree hybrid that is like a 1 or 2 iron in loft but is much easier to hit.

1 irons have faded away as put simply, they make golf harder.

With hybrids, try a few different ones as I have found a major difference between brands, particularly in terms of how high the ball flight is.

The ones I have now - Ping i25 with X stiff shafts - are ideal and have a lovely trajectory, just like an old school long iron.

I grew up using a Maxfli Australian Blade 1 iron (Sandy Lyle won Open with these irons!). I could hit it ok back then, lots of us used them off the tee on short par 4's etc for accuracy. I knew a scratch player who couldn't hit driver and used a 1 iron all the time.
However times and technology have moved on and hybrids killed them off. If you can't hit a hybrid off the fairway you're doing it wrong, they're so easy to hit when they came out first I felt they were cheatsticks.

I have a Ping Eye 1 iron in the garage from many years ago - Golfbidder would not offer me a penny for it when I took it in !

I think if I wanted a 1 iron i'd buy a Titleist 716 t-mp 2 iron which are 17 degs and get it bent,it would be an "easier" to hit 1 iron that the older ones.

Got a Srixon Z U45 18* in route to try. I normally drop my 4 iron come winter and chuck in the 3 iron, love it off the tee on the shorter par4's. I thinks its the key to why I play so well come winter. So maybe if I chuck in a longer 2 iron for when we jump back onto the whites, it'll hopefully do the same the 3 iron has all winter.

I've got a 1 iron in the old school set as per signature below.

Only got it towards the end of last season and didn't get to use it much, but can confirm that it's a bugger to hit.

Hopefully get a bit more use from it once the weather improves and the nights draw out for evening golf.
It'll certainly be in the bag for the Clitheroe Historic Open, see link below, plug, plug: :D

i think you'll find that was a Ping 1 iron.

I've got a Ram Golden Ram Tour Grind 1i in the loft - from about 1990. It was my buddies when he was off 5 and I off 6 - we were both rubbish hitting it.

For those that think hybrids balloon on them, try hitting an x stiff one and work back from there. Also avoid those game improvement type hybrids.
