What else do you get out of golf.

The opposite perspective for me! Been injured for too long, been very frustrating through lockdown with no fix in sight! I definitely miss the whole experience, hitting balls on a practise ground on my own, friendly golf, competitive golf, team golf (ok not foursomes), bit of exercise, several hours out in nature, but moreso friendships, banter, support, laughter, tears, good shots, bad shots, rollups, twilight games, away days at different courses and a whole lot more. More than anything I miss a game with my dad and a few beers after. We still do the few beers (and dinner tomorrow :) ) but a lot of the best times Ive had with my dad have been on the cricket field or golf course and not sure how many more Im going to get

To quote a bad song lyric "you dont know what youve got till its gone!"

Having a laugh & getting away from “real life” for a while.
Played yesterday after work, great way to start the wk end.
Although can’t see us getting many more twilight rounds in ?

Apart from the actual enjoyment of trying to beat the gof course.

Getting away from day to day stuff for a few hours. Me and the mate I play most of my golf with don't talk about work, or family stuff while on the course. And we laugh/take the piss when we hit awful shots. Which is often ?

It's also great to play golf with the kids as we can chat and have a laugh without too many other distractions.

Life is boring, nasty and humiliating.
Golf is a leveller and for a short while it alleviates suffering.
Make the ball a scapegoat for all your frustrations.

I like a walk, but I wouldn't say I love it. Whereas, when I'm not playing horrendously, I love to play golf. So I would say you give your body some exercise, without it feeling like a chore.

Being outdoors, away from life and phones. Playing with new people and enjoying their company. The golf is just the fun part in between the other bits.

If I’m out on my own I enjoy playing 2 balls and playing worst ball. Makes me think purely about the golf and how to score without thinking about mechanics and when it comes to scoring rounds helps you realise you can play from anywhere stress free.

(…) you can play from anywhere stress free.

Unfortunately, I cause my own stress … I think too much: turning/shifting my hips, hitting from above, through the ball, hands in front of the ball, etc. - theoretically I know it all. If I could manage to put it into practice, I would be perfect (and very happy ! ) !

It often works better when I manage to “just” hit the ball. 🤷‍♀️

When I gave up playing a few years ago I hated the game as I was so focused on scores and everything else. Since I took it back up it’s all about fun even a crap day on the course is better than being at work or dealing with life’s other stresses.

So now I do just go out and play.

Maybe I should try it like this and stop counting. 🤷‍♀️

On the other hand : I just count to state any kind of (personal) development.

But you might have something there … !(y)

I have to think about it (sic ! ) !

I may have mentioned this before  but I don't really worry about my score, how I hit the ball, duffed shot, etc. For me now, golf is an excuse to get up in the morning, have a 5/6 mile walk up and down hills to get much needed exercise (no way would I go for a long walk around the streets), meet up with old and potentially new friends, have a laugh and chat, and put the world to rights after the round. Yes, I'm still competitive but if I don't do as well as I had hoped/expected? So what. No-one is going to think any more or less of me. It's only a game!!!

The best way.
I played quite competitively for years and never enjoyed it anywhere near what I do now, phone left in the locker and shut off from life for a bit.

Exactly this for me as well. Played scratch league for years, county Juniors etc but always felt hollow afterward. My last club I missed out on Club Champs by a shot and beat myself up for it, that’s when I knew I wasn’t enjoying golf and needed a break.

Now everytime I tee it up, I do so with no phone, no numbers to shoot as targets. Just go out , aim to hit as many good shots as possible and just enjoy being out there. Weirdly I’d been scoring as well as ever before the clubs went away for winter by doing that and not putting pressure on myself. My wife starting to play has really helped me as well as we often play together for fun and just enjoy some time together with no goals other than escaping busy lives for a few hours.

I want to be competitive, but golf is not as serious as hockey used to be for me, so I can nearly always enjoy it even if not playing well. I just realise I’m out in the fresh air, enjoying a long walk with friends, or in a drawn comp with some maybe new people.
